    Pillar bed without the goop

Thank God no one called me a liberal I wasn't trying to poke anyone in the eye. Maybe a gentle one finger shot in the ribs. Can't say I've ever been accused of having any tact. One of my many many flaws. I guess I thought that 7 hours to build a sub .100" all day long shooting rifle using...

    Pillar bed without the goop

Were you on the clock this whole time? Were the others in the spirited debate on the clock? Sorry if it looks like I'm giving you a hard time here. I'm not. Just trying to get a little info. Being privy to the ins & outs of D Arms I've heard many grumblings about how few rifles Nesika...

    Pillar bed without the goop

CNC is the simple way to pillar bed a rifle. Bore the 1/2" holes the night before & glass in the pillars. Save your Zero & run the inlet program through the alum pillar material the next day. Where's the recoil lug by the way?

Trinidad isn't that far from you. It's too late to sign up for a summer NRA course. Next summer might be a good idea. gunmaker

    Extractor problem

Please don't remove the hook. It's there for a reason. I'd still like to know what the boltface was to start with and what cartridge you're trying to run home. There might be more work needed than you've let on with the limited information you've supplied here. Again I will say: Please don't...

    Wood question for Gunsmiths

I'm not saying the smith should be dragging this out but, did you send some wood projects to someone that doesn't do much if any work on wood stocked rifles?

    Firearms related picture... guess?

And I thought my time at Trinidad was filled with accidental discharges and accidents. While many bullets were flying around, no one got shot. We had broken jaw, car accident coma, broken ribs, 3 fingers sliced off in a jointer, a race riot and I broke both my arms. This all happened my...

What shooting discipline is the truest test of marksmanship?

Offhand running coyotes. The adrenalin rush hits you so quick makes it's so hard to just squeeze the trigger.

    Barrel stub thread configurations

Call the bookstore at Trinidad State Junior College and buy their barrel shank book. I'm not sure how updated it is now, but there are many prints in there for reference.

    Tool Grinding

hsmike Most machining done by gunsmiths is so much slower than the carbide they have in the tool holder requires. THREADING ESPECIALLY!!! Many of the machines aren't rigid enough as well. I'd think that most posting and reading here could take advantage of using your HSS inserts in their...

    Tool Grinding

I'd second the "How to Run a Lathe" book. Great info!!! I got mine from Southbend. Lindsay publications sells "Southbend lathe booklets" that includes this tool bit sharpening section. They also have other great books available. Get on their mailing list for catalogs...

    Bandsaw selection

much depends on how much you plan on using it. I bought a J&L 7X12" that was in a sale flyer. I think the price was around $400. It's made in Taiwan. There are many sold similar but with different names. Here's a pic of a similar one. I use mine quite a bit and it cuts very square and...

    Jig for machine stock inlet

dust collection I thought I'd revisit this thread with some additional links to some dust collection info. Getting rid of the dust in very important for your health and maintaining the accuracy in your other machines around the shop. My little shop is a 22x24 garage and with my electric...

    Stainless Barrel Finish (Mirror)

Striking vs. draw filing If you're draw filing the barrel then the ripples will be as big as the width of the file. If you run the file lengthwise with the barrel this is called striking. Striking produces a better, straighter looking finish. It also takes much longer. I usually draw file...
