    .308 and Berger vlds

Recent tests by Berger and others has shown that the VLD bullets will jump as much as .090 to .125 and still maintain accuracy, in some cases they have attained the best accuracy with this much jump. So don't be afraid to try jumping them from magazine length. As for powder and velocity, you're...

    vz24 brno mauser (pre-war) .222 benchrest rig

Greg, A couple of points if I may. You will have to bush the bolt face to reduce it to fit the .222 case head. You can soft solder the bushing in if you don't use too much heat. It wouldn't hurt to use some heat paste on the lugs anyway. The extractor may actually work "as is". It did for me on...

    rifling machine

Be VERY careful about what you buy as far as sine bar machines go. If it was designed for muzzleloader barrels it probably isn't sturdy enough to cut the fast twist required for modern centerfire barrels. If the sine bar is off to the side of the machine this is probably the case. The old Pratt...

Dave Kiff's AMAZING Rem 700 Action Truing tool!

Nat, I don't know the history behind Manson or Kiff. Fact is that you can take a good grinder operator and train them to grind any shape of reamer in a short while. While I suspect that both have ground many types of tooling in the past I doubt that either of them spend much time on the machine...

Dave Kiff's AMAZING Rem 700 Action Truing tool!

I think that Dave Manson was the first to come out with this tooling. I didn't know that Kiff was copying it.

    Bluing in NC

Nat, Dan is 6 to 8 months! I don't think that is going to work either. Apparently all you have to do to have a good business is to do good work and don't lie to people :) I appreciate Dan and the other folks at Shooters Roost not BS'ing me about lead times. While it won't work this time it might...

    Bluing in NC

Thanks Nat. First guy just won't do it and the next guy I tried gave me a lead time of 12 to 14 weeks! Really hacks me off to get the barrel threaded and chambered in less than two weeks and then have to wait 2 months for somebody to blue the darn thing! And still don't have it done!

    It is true!!!!!!

And crime in Georgia probably isn't any worse than in NC. Pelosi said that we need to enforce the laws we have and she is right about that (don't know what got into her). It is my fear that the mass shootings from the last couple of years will force congress to do something even if it's wrong.

Thread relief groove to deep ???

David, A quick calculation to a theoretical sharp root diameter on a 1 1/16-16 thread leaves a diameter of .937. While we know that threads have a small flat on them I don't see where .945 diameter would create any kind of problem.

    It is true!!!!!!

Just to play devil's advocate if I may. Right now we have to go to the sheriff of the county we live in and apply for a handgun permit in order to purchase any kind of pistol. If we apply for and receive a concealed carry permit which we carry with us at all times then we can buy pistols or...

    Both eyes open or not?

OK, a little bit against the grain. I shoot with the left eye closed. The reason for this is because I am right eye dominant but only by a very little. If I try to shoot with both eyes open my focus will begin to shift between my right eye and my left eye, even if I have a blinder over my left...

    "Chattered" chamber

You can bore the body and clean that up,but the shoulder and neck will be a problem. If you can't get it done with the wax paper or cleaning patches on the reamer try a spiral fluted reamer if you have one. Definately one of the toughest jobs in gunsmithing.

    Best Gunsmith Screwdrivers Set

I've got the Brownells set but haven't used it enough to declare it the best thing since sliced bread, but it does seem to be pretty good. I had some Grace screwdrivers but could never keep them from chipping and breaking. Haven't seen the Wheelers.

Gun Laws and Doing Barrel Work.

Jackie, If you're doing any work that involves the receiver then you need to have a FFL unless the owner is present at all times while you have the receiver.

Help with brass prep...Too much run-out.

As above, fireforming won't hurt, but I still had problems getting under .002 T.I.R. with a standard resizing die. I switched to a Lee collet die and now I have everything under .002 and most in the .001 T.I.R. It is the most accurate die I've ever used, but it doesn't set the shoulder back any...
