    Seeking Advice on Price

South Bend lists the total length of the ways as the length. A 42" would only be 16" to 20" center to center. There in lies the advantage of the 1&3/8" thru hole for gunsmith use. Kenny

    Machine shop building question

Lee Whatever you do, go with plenty of insulation in the walls and ceiling. I have 5&1/2" in my walls and 12" or so blown in my ceilings. In the winter when I walk in it feels warm and when I do use the furnace it is just on a short time to keep the chill away. Good Luck Kenny

    338

I have been known to shoot a lot more than120 rounds finding a good load. You are close. Could be bedding. Distance from rifling. Powder selection and amount. Did you shoot your buddies ammo. Have him load your ammo. Stranger things have happened. I had a die offset the neck once. Have your...

    Remington 7 1/2 primers

My experience is just the opposite, I never had a problem with any primer except Remingto 7 1/2 blowing pin holes and torching two bolts about five years ago. I didn't have many so I just thew them away. Kenny

    233 Rem Primer Choice??

The cci 400s pierce easy. cci 450 are thicker as are BR 4s. I don't use Remington 7.5s since I got several bolts torched a few years back. Kenny

    17-222 starting load data needed

You won't find much at Hodgdon or anyplace else for that matter. The powder and bullet company's still have their head in the sand. They still think we only have the 25gr bullets from 20 years ago. Hodgdon does have some info for the 17 Remington. You can pretty much cut the powder charge by two...

I bought one box of the 45s some time back just to see how they shot in my 20s. All 12 twist. They shot fine but due to the lower BC compared to the 40 VMAX I didn't buy more. Kenny

    set tru chuck

I have a Rohm 4 jaw scroll chuck with independent capabilities. I also have a Cushman three jaw with adjustment screws. I put the four jaw on the lathe four years ago when I set it up and other than taking it off for cleaning, I have yet to use the three jaw. I have a dial indicator that fits...

    Head Space?

OK now I understand what you meant. I hardly ever set a die by instructions. Kenny

    Head Space?

I am not sure what you are refering to "1/8 turn over". Screwing the die 1/8 turn moves it 0.009 in or out. All tape is not the same thickness. Measure it. Kenny

    3 jaw chuck runout?

With a little thought most any three jaw can be made Set True. If the inset in the back of the chuck isn't deep enough, it can be bored deeper so you can drill and tap the chuck for set screws to push against the back plate. I have also made the back plate larger than the chuck, with the inset...

    Rear spider question

Butch Is there a picture showing your spyder on the chuck side. I remember you saying to use powdered sugar in the barrel vise and it worked good for me .Thanks Kenny

    Rear spider question

Doug I am a long way from an expert but I indicate the bore on both ends. I use a copper ground wire between the barrel and the four jaw to cut down on twist. I use nylon set screws in the rear spyder and they are not much more than finger tight. What part of Ohio? Kenny I am in Medway

    Figuring free bore

It's pretty easy to get confused measuring from the end of the case to the marks on a bullet where it touches the rifling and think that measurment is freebore. You also have the safety factor "distance from the end of the neck to the transition. Which can be .010 or .020 . Then you have the...

    Heavy 10 Lathe

Having used both, I would never buy a Heavy 10 less than 48" and preferably 54" bed with a 1&3/8" thru hole. Kenny

    boring bar

I make my small boring bars by brazing HSS pieces on the end of the bar. This makes for very little grinding. A good method for making bars for threading small holes also. I find it easy to bore under 1/4" diameter up to 1" depth. My time has little value also. Kenny
