    What are you looking at.....

Depends how you shoot... First year rimfire benchrest shooter here. I understand some folks shoot by just touching the trigger and the rifle is fully supported by the rest and rear bag, free rifle I think. I guess if you shoot that way you can get away with not looking through the scope when...

    Starter bolt action

Starter Benchrest rifles My thoughts, as a first year BR shooter. You will spend about $700 to $800 for a new CZ, rings & scope. And, you will struggle a lot with the 3 pound trigger. Go to some matches, my guess is you will find second hand BR rifles available for little more, and you will...

    Shooting Situations

Random thoughts... I too have had shots go elswhere, and no idea why. I am new to this game this year and chalk it up to operator error. But reading these posts makes me think about what else may be going on. Last shoot in New Hampshire had some flat spots of no wind, and bullets going...

    New to rimfire benchrest

Trigger for CZ 452 ? I am also new to this game. I did buy another BR shooter's sporter rifle, with a known good performing past, and am happy that I did. I do have a CZ 452 Lux, but my gunsmith said the trigger couldn't be made any lighter than about 3 pounds. Since I got this rifle for...

"T" Style rifling in .22rf barrels

Me bad, senior moment... After clicking "Post", I remembered that the smaller number is the faster twist. Boy, am I embarrased. Sorry about that.

"T" Style rifling in .22rf barrels

Twist progression I think... I think most are a progression, going from a lesser twist to a greater twist as the bullet travels down the barrel. In the old days, with cast lead bullets and black powder, the thought was the "exposion" of the powder would cause the bullet to strip if introduced...

    Rapid actions screws

Try some tinfoil... Tinfoil is pretty stable and thin, the figure 3/1000 sticks in my mind. Add as needed for the fit you want. Won't rust, nor hold moisture. See you this Saturday ? My best, David

Looking for a Winchester Model 52 barrel

If recrowning, slug 1st... If you decide to just recrown, have the barrel slugged, maybe you will find a tight spot somewhere near the end. Have the barrel cut and crowned there. You might be very happy with the results.

    dot reticle

Optics I am new to this sport and I am 66 years old. I looked at what others were using and ended up with a Weaver 36 power target scope with a 1/8th dot. When you are at a match, take a look through other's scopes and see what you can see clearly. Good shooting.

    Storing your ammo?

Storing ammo... Hi Bill, I would suggest air tight containers. .50 cal. ammo cans etc. A basement allows more constant temperatures back East, but often more humidity. Those of us in the East should use air tight, in the celler or not. Also, sometimes the Army/Navy stores have larger metal...

    Friend Wilbur

Give Bill Calfee a thread... I am new at this benchrest game. I just finished reading Bill's thread on the centerfire benchrest forum. I think he has enought to offer to justify his own thread. I am impressed with the concepts. His thread reflects creative thinking in progress. Taking...

Gun test to look at... Hi Marine, Take a look at http://www.gun-tests.com/performance/jul96update.html for a generally favorable report on the rifle. What scope are you going to use ? I guess I will need to bring some scoped .22 this fall or get one there. My best regards, David

To make a round forend flat...

So this year I got into rimfire benchrest. I bought an old 10.5 pound class Remington 40X and was loaned a front rest. The stock was a factory stock and I needed to fight to keep it upright. I looked into getting a BR stock, but did not want to spend the money, having gotten myself on a...

    Another Redfield Sight question

Larger may be better... Years back when scopes were not much in use, one of the sight companies, Marble I think, did research and determined that the then trend towards smaller holes in the rear sight was counter-productive in accurate shooting. The eye has a natural tendency to self-center...
