    A guy calls...

I have had the same thing happen to me. It has particularly hit after I stopped accepting credit cards. So far I have been lucky -- I gave the customers their gun back along with an invoice and asked that they mail me a check. I am four for four for the past 30 days in getting that check back...

    Turning down a barrel

Since your barrel is not tapered, just turn it between centers and forget about "dialing it in." If you need to insert a piece of scrap into your three-jaw and turn a center, that will work, too. Clemson

    Am I wrong ?

I let the customer supply as many of the components as he wants to, and I also let him do as much of the work as he wants to. Often my customers would like to do their own stock fitting and finishing, for example. I will fit barrel and do the actions modifications required and just charge him...

The difference between an import lathe and an American made machine. Pics up!

I agree in principle, Paul, and I personally use a 13" South Bend for gunsmithing, but I am unaware of any manual lathes currently being manufactured in the U.S.

    open to suggestions

I work on a fair number of these things in my shop. Are you absolutely sure that you are using the correct ammunition? 38 S&W and 38 S&W Special seem to get mixed use in these guns, and they are not interchangeable. Clemson

    Which material for mandrel?

I use 12L14, but a number of my students have successfully used 1018. Clemson

Where have all the reamer rental places gone?

I'm with Jim. White Rock Tool & Die, 6400 N. Brighton Avenue, Kansas City, MO 64119 (816) 454-0478. They do NOT have a website. They operate the old fashioned way, answering the telephone and mailing you a list of reamers. Great folks to deal with. Clemson

Shooting 222 and other rounds with same case head

It will never be a benchrest action, but for a field gun the Sako L461 is a real jewel for the .222. Clemson

    Trigger weight gauge

I use the Lyman electronic gauge, and I have used the RCBS spring gauge. Both work fine for giving you an idea of where you are with trigger jobs. The Lyman is not "legal" for match work. It is very convenient in my shop, however, and a good bit easier to use than a spring gauge. Clemson

    Bisley Vise?

I use these on a machinist vise in my shop. I like them. http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/pid=923/Product/RUBBER_FACED_VISE_JAWS

    Southbend 13

I apologize to everyone for not answering this earlier. My notification system is apparently turned off. My spindle measures about 20.5 inches. Mounting my 4-jaw (an 8 inch chuck) extends that to about 24.5" to the outside of the jaws. My spider adds about an inch on the other end of the...

    Southbend 13

I have one. Great lathe. I chamber in the steady rest, so I have not measured the spindle length, but you won't be able to swing much less than a 24" barrel through it. I do have a spider for the outboard end, but I have never used it. Clemson

    bbl polishing/removing a linear scratch

I have a Mark X with a name and social security number electropenciled into the barrel! When I get something like this, I take the barrel off and use a barrel spinner against a 2" belt sander (Knife grinder) to get it cleaned up, then reblue. Clemson

    Best Gunsmith Screwdrivers Set

I have the Brownells Magna Tip, B-Square, Vermont American, Mac (now Grace, I think), and Forster sets. The Brownells are best by a wide margin in the replaceable bit category (B-Square are soft), and the Mac in the fixed blade screwdrivers are the berries. Clemson

    Rem 700 reference material

I don't know about "best," but John Hinnant's book, The Complete Illustrated Guide to Precision Rifle Barrel Fitting, is primarily aimed at the Remington 700 action. Clemson

Model 11 Stevens in 32 Long Rifle

Paul, I worked on a Marlin lever action last year that was in 32 rimfire. As I recall, Southern Ohio Guns had ammunition. Various companies do make runs of the stuff occasionally. It would be a real hoot to get a box and try the old girl before you go cutting it up. Clemson

    Checkering advice

When I have converted pressed checkering to "standard", I have used nothing but a V-tool, and I followed the existing pattern lines. Using a spacer could land you in some difficulty. I don't have the patience for checkering, and I have proven that to myself several times! Some folks have told...

Interarms Mark X as a Swtch Barrel?

OK, it was the terminology that was throwing me off. We Mauser guys refer to that surface as the "Primary Torque Shoulder" on a Model 98. The face of the receiver is the secondary torque shoulder, and at most may be set up to snug up to the barrel shoulder when the tenon crushes against the...
