How much do you suppose this'll cost us? I just can't wait for the next disaster so we in the US can go spend money on it! :D

I'm bett'n $350B. I'd say trillions, but we're so broke now I'm not sure that amount of philanthropy will fly.

My sentiments extactly Rick! Money before lives, thats lame. I hope the next disaster isn't in the US. But if it was we would be there for you to.
 
Earthquake,Tsunami,Nuke Plant, how bad can it get. Still 1000s missing. Get ready USA.Yellow Stone is overdue.

Actually, there seems to be no concern over the power plants other than not having electricity. I'm readin where its not as bad as TMI, and nothing like Chernobyl (sp)

Ya know, I'm all for helpin folks out, but, I tend to prefer it when people who hand out their own money actually know where it is going. Like, community level stuff. Our office manager at work just got back from a missionary trip to Haiti doing what he could there. His description of what happened to all the aid money would make you vomit. The terrific waste coupled with corruption, basically meant no regular folks got anything at all. Seems a common theme to me.

Of the things that CAN be done, I'm surprised there's no mention of them parking a few carriers in Tokyo bay and pluggin in the proverbial extension cords. They do it in Hawaii, did it in New Orleans. I guess every port city in the US has the capability. I'd be surprised if it wasn't possible in Japan. But who knows. Seems to me, the Ronald Reagan powered the entire island of Oahu during a power outage some time back, and most folks never knew it.

James, I'm not sure where you're from, but, we've had plenty of em and I can't ever remember a single foreign aid dollar making the news here. Not in my lifetime... ever...

That being said, we know the system worked. I can only hope it works as well in Japan.

What is going on in Japan is simply mindboggling. We have a modern 1st World Democracy that planned for just about ever contengency, they even had a Sunami warning that went instantly into every cell phone. Japan is the model for all Earthquake Proofing of infrastructure.

But, when a billion tons of water decides to come down on you, we are reminded that in the face of nature's power, we are often left helpless.

What we can do is help, (if asked), avoid anything that could make things worse, (trying to cash in), and pray to what ever God you worship for the comfort of the survivors.

How many other countries CAN?

You won't see France sending any Carriers over or much else, for that matter Or Canada, Sweeden, Denmark, Norway, etc, etc. They have spent it all on their Social Programs. We will see Australia, perhaps New Zeland, Great Britain, perhaps the Chinese and South Koreans.

I wouldn't expect to see may Muslim Countries involved either. So it's up to us, what remains of the Free World, to HELP. Whatever it costs, it costs, that's just the way it is. A gift is a gift and nothing can or should be expected in return.

I live in The Peoples Republic Of Caleeeffoorrnniiaa were our last Governator couldn't even pronounce the states name he was in charge of.On a regular basis we hear the state has no money for the schools no money for the police to fight gangs no money to fix our roads and they want us to vote in more taxes during the great depression of 2011 so those in charge can fix these issues.
Maybe the government can spend a little bit of our money right here in the states to fix our problems then take all of the surplus money to Japan and fix there problems.It has worked very well over here already as they have removed all of the excess money from the social security program and as everybody knows it is running smoothly now with our seniors who were lied too not getting a cost of living raise at all.
On the bright side of things those in charge are talking about spending billions upon billions of dollars on a highspeed bullet train so California can be just like Japan.Right now we can fly from northern california to southern california in 52 minutes for $125 but with a highspeed bullet train the same journey will take 3 hours and only cost $300 as a lowball estimate.
With the great minds like we have in charge today distributing our money we should all vote for higher taxes so we can support all those countries in need of help despite what they have already done here.

I've been following the discussion and it seems to me that some homework could be done. There is a wealth of knowledge only a few clicks away on how much international aid was given and available during hurricane Katrina(for example). After doing a bit of research, it appears that most countries pledge support with equipment,experts, or dollars, and it is up to the recipient goverenment to accept or decline the offers. The USA has declined many offers of support during their disasters (ie. Katrina). Unfortunately, I think the media does many of us a disservice when only reporting for shock value, and not all the facts. I am Canadian eh!

Out here in earthquake country the Japanese send over experts all the time.They study our buildings and what has happened to them and design there buildings to avoid what they are seeing.This is considered foreign aid and when you figure 20 experts for a month with all the associated costs involved it looks like they donated 20 million to the cause when it was more like a road trip to help there education.Nothing wrong with it just not my idea of disaster relief help.
After most disasters you need big trucks lots of tractors and tons of matches to burn up all the debris.A quick trip to New Orleans will quickly point that out.

Lynn, Kalefornia sounds very much like any number of States out there right now. I live in Maine most of the year and it has been Bancrupt for about as long as Kalefornia has and with everyone in Government ignoring it by getting Bond Issue over Bond Issue presented and passed. At least the Governor of Florida has the Stones to say no on their Bullet Train. I don't know for sure where that lies right now but I hope he prevails.

What would be a much better project for America is the construction of a viable Interstate Railway System and get the freakin trucks off the road and into Intermodal activities. That won't happen because the first building on the right when leaving Union Station in DC is the Teamsters Union Building looking dead at the Capital Building. Such is the state of our Country.

I hate the foreigh aid too but I would much rather see all of it that goes to the Arab world stopped but then, look at what we have for a President! Is he likely to get up behind dat? A Natural Disaster of the magnitude that just happened is a different story. Whatever went down before that Earthquake doesn't realllly matter. Human beings who had nothing much to do with either our government or theirs need our help desporately. We have to Cowboy Up as fellow humans.

I do understand your frustration as it it relates to your countries economics right now. Canada like many countries buy a lot of US goods. We have many resources here but are quite dependent on your goods. If a country like ours suffers economically you will feel the ripple effect also. Much of the world is dependent on one another particulary the US for it's goods, so the sooner Japan recovers the sooner they will be buying goods and resources. That been said, I know it doesn't help to pay the bills today.
