    pre boring reaming

Hi Mickey, Nice to know. Another thought occurred, usually when I run into chatter problems, (either turning or milling applications) it seems the chatter problem comes on the final finish cut. I get around it by decreasing rotation and increasing feedrate, usually -10% on the spindle...

    pre boring reaming

Hello, I was working and thought about the fact that most of us drill and bore to remove the bulk of meat from the chamber. Well, at work, the engineers had us change all of our program feed rates for our reamers and all the porting tools. All of them, even the deep hole port tools that port...

    Kelbly IM Stock

Cameron, On mine, I ran into hollow cavity space while cutting the mortise for the bolt handle. No problems with the mill outs for ports and bolt stop release. I packed nylon into the hole and glassed over, finished it off with bondo putty. I filled the butt stock with great stuff foam.

What's the Short Answer About Primers?

Think it could be a push to fill contracts for military ammo? If I owned a primer factory, I would focus my efforts on conducting business with the fed. gov. to manufacture product under contract at some drastically inflated price to the tax payer. Then, when there was a shortage in my other...

    Nightforce scopes for BR ?

Joe I have been using them for 9 years on LR rifles and can say with certainty that optical clarity is excellent. Where these scopes really stand out though is in durability, that unfortunately plays into the weight issue. True story: At the 2003 Williamsport World Open, I had my 308 Baer...

    Al's 6x47L

Al, You mentioned the cases had a "scrubbed" or "frosted" appearance due to the die not being hardened. 1. Why would die hardness cause this condition? 2. How would one harden the inner surface of a die without suffering distortion to the important thread fit on the die body? Thanks, Mike

    H-4350 vs H4831 SC for 6.5x284

Just as David Dumas mentions with Retumbo, don't overlook the really slow overbore powders. I fill up the case with vvn-170. RL25 works too, as with any rifle no two are alike and you find what works. Much of the Williamsport crew run H4350 in 6.5/284, If memory is right I believe around 48...

    GOOD NEWS! 'Ultralite' stocks.

Perhaps the placement of the metal which rides the front bag offers harmonic benefits. This would seem to make that piece of metal less barrel block like and more tuner like. Could the metal be thought of as a continuation or second stage of the muzzle attachment? With Joe's background in...

    Building Loaner Rifles - Caliber

Dick, Consider the various 6mm platforms. In the 6BR, you have good brass available, and charge weights in and around 30 grains. The Dasher will load a bit heavier on powder thus a bit more performance. The 6x47 is a good choice also. All these cartridges use the small rifle primer. Recoil...

    Bullet engraving

I have seen monolithic bullets with grooves machined in them to eliminate bore pressure problems. We recovered a few from the hillside and they appear to work properly by displacing metal into the grooves on the bearing surface. My friends rifle wouldn't shoot very accurately with these...

    Ford's new automated plant

I find the "Union" issue to be moot and nothing more than a scapegoat for bad business fundamentals. "Labor", whether organized or not is a cost factor no different than materials or rent. Someone or some group of people should have been paying more attention to cash flows, research and market...

    Economy. Retail Sales Are BOOMING!

Phil, Paint more pretty pictures for me. I went to the mall today and there wasn't much action there. My brother in law manages that particular mall and we talked last night during Turkey Dinner; he states that vacant retail space is increasing and customer visits are way below projected...

How much bore runout is too much?

Jackie, Thanks for your reply. I couldn't chamber the barrel myself, I had the headstock torn down for spindle cone pulley and final drive gear maint. My friend's lathe has a headstock which puts the muzzle way back inside the gearbox where he couldn't get to it. Great idea about boring the...

    Hunters . . . but not shooters

Pete, I have experienced this also, many of the guys I work with consider themselves die hard archery hunters. I suggested getting involved in our local club and participation in the 3-D matches every other week beginning in May and ending in September. You can really hone your shooting and...

    Was anyone here aware that...

Concerning fuel for cars and trucks, I can't understand why there isn't more production of diesel powered vehicles. The use of bio-diesel adds considerate competition to pricing on light sweet crude . I read some research about bio-diesel and it is amazing the amount of raw products this fuel...

How much bore runout is too much?

Guys, The best ppc barrel I own was chambered using electrical tape to match the size of the spindle bore. There were bunches of layers of black tape wrapped onto the barrel by spinning until the "tape sleeve" made the spindle ID. The muzzle end was driven back into the headstock with a...

berger 6.5 thick jackets grouping issues?

Tim in Texas, Regardless of who's bullets you shoot, here are a few points to consider from a person who swages his own... There is always some trade off concerning projectile weights, profile, and certainly jackets. The Berger/J-4 jacket is essentially the "gold standard" for both home and...

    Harry Jones Season Ending Match

1000 yard tunnel...Hugh. Somebody better tell "Ice" to cool off the mirage!! All jokes aside, when conditions are good, groups can be very very small but when conditions are bad, it is so soupy that you'll be looking for a grilled cheese sandwich to dunk it in. Topography at Harry Jones gives...
