Many years ago I worked in a machine shop and most of the guys there were into guns, cars, or both.Myself and another machinist who was better
at building motors than me, ran a NHRA legal D/G 55 Chevy in the late sixties. We ran low 12 high 11 e.t's [ 11.87 best ].Our MPH was on the low side because we ran 6:14 gears. Could have done better with a 5:57 gear set. We broke too many parts to afford another one. We should have had wing nuts on the trans. A blown clutch was a regular occurrence and made it difficult at times to get through class eliminations. Managed to win class 7 times. Took a picture of the trophies sitting on the fiberglass hood before I sold it.
One more thing, we always flat towed because like a lot of other racers we didn't feel we could afford a trailer. I jackknifed it on a wet winding road and bent the fender on my tow rig, a 1966 Chevelle SS. After that I got a pickup. Never did get a trailer.
