7.62x39 Customized by Bill Truitt

Before using up those last rounds try to determine what bullet is used, then measure for over all length. That will greatly speed up your attempt to duplicate the load.

Also weigh one of the rounds then mark the case. Comparing the weight of the fired case plus the type of bullet to the weight of the ubfired round should give you a good ball park estimate of the powder charge in grains. remembering of course that bullets can vary by a grain or so even from the same box.

PS
I would think that IMR 4198 would be well suited to the case capacity and short barrel.

Some thoughts:

1. Setting up to reload seems, to me, to be the best option. Would be a great learning experience for the youngster, too.

2. Look on the barrel. It might be that the bore diameter is on it.

3. You might also be able to determine the specific bullet diameter by process of elimination by looking at the weight and style of the bullet against what Hornady offers in the V-Max: http://www.hornady.com/bullets/rifle .

4. Once you figure out the bullet/bore diameter, finding a good-enough-for-deer load is really a piece of cake.

Regards,

Greg J.

I would wait for bill. You probably can get the information on his handloads with out any problems.
That has to be a dandy case for a little guy.
The other one that may be just as good is the 30 br.
I have though for a long time that the br would be a really nice white tail case for people who are recoil sensative.
There are handlods in the sierra book. 1680 powder and 4198 for the 762/39.
Dick I'm sorry to hear bill is not doing well. I hope to see him this year

Gerry,
My Grandson has been shooting a 30BR for the last 4-5yrs. He will not let me rechamber it. It is not a recoil issue with him as he can handle my 458Lott. It is just so accurate and he has the utmost confidence in it.
Butch

Only 2 left now. Boy this little round is devastating for its size. Taken at 90 yds. Hope I can reach Bill before Rifle season.

This got me to thinkin

I still have the first Benchrest rifle I bought. It's a Rem 700 HBR rifle. I have a 30-44 barrel and a 30 HC barrel for it, neither of which are competative for benchrest but shoot sub .05 groups. I also have a nice Lone Wolf Thumbhole Kevlar stock for it that has a Green pebble finsih and a soft 1/2" pad. I have all the makings, eh? HUMMMMMMM. Interestingly enough I bought it from Bill Truitt.

Pete,
Sub .05 groups thats pretty small, methinks perhaps you meant sub .5

Butch ''
Looks like your grandson is hoocked on accuracy.
It's a great case . Just enough and accurate'''''
I played with it way back , now that we have good cases we have it made.

12 or so years ago there was an article in either handloader or the American rifleman on reloading the 7.62x39 with 160gr cast gas checked. I made amess of those up for use in a SKS, slighty modded to make it usefull for hunting. Accuracy was good or better than my 94 Win 30-30 with a little more range and almost no recoil due to the action ( lousy trigger though). If you put that in the boiler romm you went home with dinner.

There's more higher-quality factory ammo out there than most people realize.

Bill put together this gun and some loads for us, and since Bill has not been well we have not been able to get any ammo that shoots as good as the load put together so I am considering selling this rifle.

I have a CZ527 in 7.62x39 that I think is just the bee's knees. Conceptually (though, I'm sure, certainly not in execution) it's the same idea as your rifle.

While I reload and I'm sure that doing the same would make for a wonderful experience for you and your son, if you *just* want to hunt with the rifle you may well fall into one of those groups of people who uses the heck out of a rifle and still doesn't put more than 10 rounds a year through it.

If that's the case, you might look a bit further for quality factory ammo. Yes, Wolf makes softpoints but I'm no big fan. Someone has already mentioned Lapua. And don't forget Corbon and Hornady.

Until you've bought a box of each of those and given each a fair shake, I think talk of selling the rifle is premature. Of course, it's your business what you do but I've traded away too many that I wish I had back. I know that if I ever went temporarily insane and let go of my CZ527, I'd regret it for the rest of my life. Your rifle is not just a sweet piece but it has great memories and family history. For the kid's sake, hang onto it.

I've had a Mark X Mini Mauser for about 15 years now. For 10 of those years, the magazine spring has been broke. I have tried to get one from every company from Interarms, Charles Daly, Remington to now EAA and have been unsuccessful. The closest I got was a mag spring for the standard size action from Gun Parts Corp.

I don't know how CZ parts availability is, but if it is anything like trying to get something from Zastava, I can not recommend it.

Therefore a .308 bullet is not the correct diameter to use in the 7.62x39; most likely not that good the other way around.

If a .308 diameter barrel was used to chamber this cartridge; how should it be marked?

John,
Some 7.62X39are .311 and some are .308. You need the right bullet for it to perform. You might also check as it is a 7.62 and not a 7.92.
Butch

I have heard of a AK clone that had problems due the the manufacturer using .308 barrels. Don't remember the details, probably excessive pressures causing malfunctions.

One more left, then back to the drawing board. If anyone has contact with Bill, please let him know we need a couple more rounds.

Just thought I'd chime in here and give a few cents to the discussion. I just measured some (10) wolf military classic full metal jacket ammo,(7.62x39). I got a very consistent .308 bullet diameter. So over to the gun cabinet, and low and behold the bore diameter of my AK is also .308, so I'm not understanding how there can be different caliber 7.62 bullets. My 8x57 Mauser has a 7.92 bullet and it measures .323.
