30ppc
Here are the particulars.
The reamer features a .332 neck, zero freebore, 1.5 degree lead, and a overall length of 1.505. The body is the same as my .269 neck 6PPC Reamer.
I arrived at these dimensions by first making a case, seeing what would be the ideal minimum neck turn and case length, and then having Dave Kiff grind the reamer to match.
I make the cases by blowing them out. I take a Lapua 220 Russian and fill it to the neck shoulder junction with 133, then seat a cheap 22 cal bullet. I fire this in my .269 neck 6PPC chamber, and this makes a fully blown out no-neck turn 6PPC. I then load this with a standard 6PPC load and fire it in the 30PPC barrel. What comes out is a Factory 30PPC, if there was such an animal.
I then turn the necks, and consider them ready to go to the line, as the two firings blows the case out quite well.
We use Krieger 1-17 twist barrels. Mainly because I use Kriegers in my 6PPC Rifles. But other makers also make some hot 30 barrels as well.
I am sort of stuck on 112 grn BIB Bullets. I consider them the industry standard when it comes to light 30 caliber bullets designed for Varmint for Score Shooting.
In cooler weather, we use IMR Austrailian 4227, at about 2950 fps. As the weather gets hotter, N120 seems to be a better choice, as the 4227 can get a little touchy when the temperature gets in the 90's. By touchy, I mean it can go from being just right, and deadly accurate, to too hot in the blink of an eye.
As was mentioned, any powder in this burn rate will work, just remember that you are dealing with a small capacity case where small changes can produce big results, for the good or bad.
The main reason for my developing this chambering was to give shooters who owned 6PPC Rifles the option of simply having to screw on a 30PPC Barrel to go score shooting. Recoil is quite light with the 112's, and accuracy is dead on.
As for the loading dies, I took a Wilson Competition 30-30 seater, cut it to the appropriate length, and ran my chamber reamer in. Presto, a great seater.
As for sizing, I took a Redding 6PPC Full Length Die, chucked it up, and reamed out the neck with a 21/64 carbide reamer. This die will decap the primer, bump the shoulder, size the neck, and full length size the body in one stroke.
If I have left anything out, ask away. This is a VERY affective 100 yard score chamberring..........jackie
