30 ppc

I just bought a 30PPC set up for my Viper and the seller [ Esten Spears ] gave me a little nugget of info.

Jackie blows his necks out and his reamer cuts the chamber to fit this neck length. If you neck up the brass with tapered mandrels then the neck ends up considerably shorter than the blown out brass. Esten got PTG to make up a 30PPC reamer to suit the mandrel expanded neck length.

I noticed the same issue when I was doing my 30BR cases. I blew out 15 with pistol powder and a wax plug. The rest I used an assortment of mandrels. The blown out cases had to be shortened a lot to fit the chamber.

If you do a "30PPC" search on this site's search function you will get all the info you need.

Good luck
Ray

Keith, I built a 30 PPC

Mr. Schmidt,

Would you be as so kind to share any and all info you possess on the 30 PPC ?

I sent you an email at schmjack50@aol.com ----have yet to receive a reply

last year after buying a reamer from Jackie's specs. The only SMART way to expand the brass is by blowing it out. I tried mandrels and hydraulic and some ways I don't even want to admit to. The best, most consistent, and easiest on the brass was to fill the case w/ powder, stick a crap 22 bullet on it and fire it into a 30PPC chamber.

I tried 4227, 4198, Tubal 2000 and a number of other powders in mine. I settled on 1680. I have NOT yet used N-120, it should be good as weell. I did NOT like 4227. It was way too hard on the cases. 4198 and T-2000 were too slow for my taste. My further pursuits, other than N-120, will be w/ powders in the speed range for Magnum pistols, 44 Mags and the likes. That just seems to be the rage that fits ths application as well.

Just my experiences

30ppc

Here are the particulars.

The reamer features a .332 neck, zero freebore, 1.5 degree lead, and a overall length of 1.505. The body is the same as my .269 neck 6PPC Reamer.

I arrived at these dimensions by first making a case, seeing what would be the ideal minimum neck turn and case length, and then having Dave Kiff grind the reamer to match.

I make the cases by blowing them out. I take a Lapua 220 Russian and fill it to the neck shoulder junction with 133, then seat a cheap 22 cal bullet. I fire this in my .269 neck 6PPC chamber, and this makes a fully blown out no-neck turn 6PPC. I then load this with a standard 6PPC load and fire it in the 30PPC barrel. What comes out is a Factory 30PPC, if there was such an animal.

I then turn the necks, and consider them ready to go to the line, as the two firings blows the case out quite well.

We use Krieger 1-17 twist barrels. Mainly because I use Kriegers in my 6PPC Rifles. But other makers also make some hot 30 barrels as well.

I am sort of stuck on 112 grn BIB Bullets. I consider them the industry standard when it comes to light 30 caliber bullets designed for Varmint for Score Shooting.

In cooler weather, we use IMR Austrailian 4227, at about 2950 fps. As the weather gets hotter, N120 seems to be a better choice, as the 4227 can get a little touchy when the temperature gets in the 90's. By touchy, I mean it can go from being just right, and deadly accurate, to too hot in the blink of an eye.

As was mentioned, any powder in this burn rate will work, just remember that you are dealing with a small capacity case where small changes can produce big results, for the good or bad.

The main reason for my developing this chambering was to give shooters who owned 6PPC Rifles the option of simply having to screw on a 30PPC Barrel to go score shooting. Recoil is quite light with the 112's, and accuracy is dead on.

As for the loading dies, I took a Wilson Competition 30-30 seater, cut it to the appropriate length, and ran my chamber reamer in. Presto, a great seater.

As for sizing, I took a Redding 6PPC Full Length Die, chucked it up, and reamed out the neck with a 21/64 carbide reamer. This die will decap the primer, bump the shoulder, size the neck, and full length size the body in one stroke.

If I have left anything out, ask away. This is a VERY affective 100 yard score chamberring..........jackie

Jackies got this 30PPC thing nailed down. I bought a USED barrel from him this last summer. Won the first time out. Had him chamber a new barrel for my light gun,won with that one also. His stuff works!! VV120 works great at about 30 grs. I can't get enough 4198 in the case to make it go fast but sure is accurate. JLC will fix you up with dies. Had him make me a seater and sizer, There perfect. All I need to do is learn how to shoot!!

2950 is 2950

regardless of what it comes out of. 30's have a good node there and many, many matches have been won @ 200 and 300 yds at that speed and with that weight bullet. If one can believe the published loads for HBR rifles it would appear to me that a lot of them go a lot slower than 2950.
