    !&$#.... Remington arms...

They are not made by Remington. I don't know if they are the same or not. I want them to be the same thickness and also fit the Kleinendorst tool that locates the lug so I don't have to pin them. I guess I could order one and see if they are the same or not. They are also Stainless I believe...

    !&$#.... Remington arms...

 I went to put a rifle back together today that I had finished painting and for some reason could not find the recoil lug anywhere (long action 700) All I had was a Tubb style. I had already headspaced the chamber with the factory lug that had been ground flat. I did not want to use a...

    Rem 700 thread pattern action

My Defiance is 16 TPI and a Remington barrel will screw into it but it has a long tenon. He might make 700 clones that have the regular short tenon. I will no longer ruin a 700 by recutting the threads either.

    Indexing a brake

Not having the time nor resources to make all those test models, I blatantly plagiarized the design used by the Apache helicopters (plant is 3 miles from my house). I have a friend that works in an aerospace shop and he had a lot of down time. I just gave him barrel drops and a blueprint. He...

precision matthews pm 30 mill has arrived!

That will do about 75% of what I ever do but even yesterday, I was constantly moving the knee up and down to avoid losing my set up as I changed tooling. I guess the bigger machines just have a little more versatility. That really does look handy though.

    Hornady's New 17 Hornet

Must be a regional thing as I have never even seen Mach II ammo for sale at any of the local places including Sportsmans Whorehouse. Most of my friend all have the hummer but none a MII. As for being idea for coyotes, I think it is still marginal as many of my coyotes are shot at 200-250 yds...

    Chamber reaming question

I think there may be a lot of truth to this. It amazes me how much difference the right cutting oil can make. I use my regular sulfur oil for about 90% and then switch to mostly Tap Magic for the last 5 or 6 plunges. I can see a difference in surface finish and feel a torque difference on my...

    Modifying a Ruger M77...

I agree with Mike- they are very hit and miss. A guy in town had some blocks made up that replace the angled Ruger recoil lug with a straight one. He claims that once bedded and the stock bolt pulling perpendicular to the action, they shoot quite well. I have had a couple that shot pretty good...

Brownell's Gun Kote or Teflon/Moly spray bake-on finishes

Yes, it is the pickup tube that is clogged. I notice that Brownells now SELLS an extra nozzle that is supposed to fix this problem. The problem that I have is obviously endemic to this high-build sprayand should have been addressed from the start. They should INCLUDE the special nozzle with the...

Brownell's Gun Kote or Teflon/Moly spray bake-on finishes

Have any of you tried both of these finishes? Looking for a reason to choose one over another. I have used the Moly/Teflon bake on finish on one rifle but the can got clogged up before I could use it a second time. This will be mostly for painting SS barrels after grit blasting them. Thanks

Pull, reinstall bbl without damaging finish?

I watched a buddy of mine rechamber and re-time a brake on a very expensive 50 cal (McMillan built) that was Rogard finished. He used a business card in the vice and grabbed the barrel by the threads in the chuck. He then used brass tips in his steady to center the chamber end which the threaded...

    bedding compound

Brownells holds their stuff very, very close to their hearts- you won't get anything out of them about who makes stuff because they know that someone can go around them and get away from their 200% markup. Mike- nice to know about the 6.3-1 ratio. I don't buy Marine Tex anymore but still have...

    Barrel Crown

The crown isn't what was causing those bullets to keyhole. Even if the crown is horrible, a stable bullet will right itself and make a straight hole- just not exactly in the same place every time. A bullet keyholes because it is not stable- for whatever reason, voids in the core, insufficient...

Need help with chamber pre-drill and bore.

just don't do what I did  I did my first chamber today with the pre-bore method. I made paint mark on the 29/64th so I would know where to stop. That went fine. I then set up a taper with my compound and started cleaning up the hole. That went fine too until I went to take my last spring...

    bedding compound

Im sure some of you guys have done a lot more bedding jobs that me but a lot of mine have been on pretty big magnums with lots of recoil. I gave up on Acraglass because it never really got hard enough. I like using Marine tex and feel it is as impervious to chemicals as anything - it's a little...

How do I remove the factory barrel from a Remington 700?

I certainly haven't removed "thousands" of factory 700 barrels but maybe a couple dozen. I think Nat's advice is sound. I don't have a Brownell's wrench but have used them a fair bit. I have been in a lot of shops and seen what they used. I ground a piece of tool steel that fits into the rear...

    Chamber and Reamer

I have a 6.5-284 reamer that Kiff made for me. The freebore section is so tight that some of the bullets- the long shank ones- touch the freebore all the way around before getting to the lands. I feel like it is too small but sounds like Dave is gonna say it is within tolerances? I am going to...

    Neck tightness afer firing

I have one of those for my 6.5-284 (without the window in it) but that still doesn't tell me if I have enough clearance- at .003 under it will certainly fit, just wondering if it will give a clean release or not. I guess I will shoot a couple of groups with unturned brass and a couple with about...

    Neck tightness afer firing

I have measured the loaded rounds- .294, the chamber is supposed to be .297 if Kiff hit his mark. That makes .003" total clearance or .0015 per side. I haven't had a "no-turn" neck quite this tight, just wondering if I am really going to get away with it or not.
