    my first f-class comp

Hearing protection F Open - front rest or bipod F/TR - front bipod Rear bag Empty chamber indicator Wide brim boonie hat Some sort of mat, an old throw rug or campers mat will work. A decent spotting scope is nice, but if you have enough scope it's not a requirement. A cart is nice, but a...

Berger 210 Target VLD bullet in a .308

Don't use them myself, watched a couple of guys I know at a local match try the heavier bullets in .308 (inclding the 210s) for a year or two. There was no evidence of any advnatage noted in their scoring so I stuck with the 155 gr bullets. YMMV.

    Best caliber for 1000 yards

Just to show it's proper adjustment of the nut behind the trigger that really matters, here's a little info from one of Jerry Tierneys posts at another site. Well, maybe he cheated a little, he did mount a scope on the rifle after all :D

    Best caliber for 1000 yards

My favorite match is a non-affiliated match in Alabama. The rules are a little restrictive as far as equipment goes which puts more importance on the skill of the shooter, no sighters, no wind flags, no machine front rests. A lot of variety in equipment, and shooters range from first timers (low...

    Sierra 95 HPBT in 1 in 10

Tried the various 95 gr VLDs in my 6mm Rem AI. At lower velocities they were either unstable or very inaccurate. Loaded up towards the hot end of the range they started shooting pretty nicely. This all indicates to me that the stability out of a 1-10 is very marginal. Yeah, adding velocity just...

    Best caliber for 1000 yards

I've had pretty much the oppposite experience with the 6.5 X 284, it's been remarkably consistant for me. Admittedly I pretty much used up the first barrel figuring it out, but since then adjustments have only been needed when having to switch over to a new lot number of one component or...

    Barrel life question

Let's see, I've gotten as many as 1,200 rounds of 6.5 X 284 down the barrel with 20 round strings before the barrel looked just like a dry lake bed. For about the first 8 inches. So depending on your particulr application I wouldn't expect anything much past 800 rounds.

new to forum with a 1000 dollar budget

427 - On load developement for a .260. 139 gr Lapua Scenar, either Federal or CCI primer, either H4831 or H4831SC, and work your way towards 47.0 gr of powder carefully. Remington .260 brass will work OK, you'll just want to inspect and sort the brass a bit and clean up the flash holes...

new to forum with a 1000 dollar budget

Starting Out IMO there is nothing wrong with starting out with either a complete Savage rifle or using an inexpensive Savage action as the starting point for an inexpensive budget constrained build. It is better to shoot in a match and have fun rather than sit at home because someone might look...

    what about a 6.5 creedmoor??

IMO, the Creedmoor is fine for 600 yard matches with the 120-130 gr bullets, but for 1,000. Will it work? Yes. Best solution ballistically? No. I prefer the 139 Scenar and 142 SMK at 2950 fps which the Creedmoor will not achieve, the case simply isn't large enough. Problem with a 140 gr class...

F-Class "Swedish style" and twist for Norma 6,5 VLD?

After looking at L-Ws web site, it seems they only offer whole inch twists in 6.5 mm so the choice there would be either 1-9" or 1-8" twist. The 1-9" should properly stabilize a 130 gr bullet. I have been using their match program barrels which have worked exceptionally well for me, as I...

    264win mag in F-class?

You can get a replacement bolt from PTG for not a lot of money if you choose to go with a cartridge with a .473 case head diameter which would give you everything based off the .308, 30-06, 7 X 57 and 284 parent cases. On the other hand, you could chamber it in 7mm RSAUM. I've heard the .300...

    Help with F/TR Rifle

A 700P (the P actually stands for phosphated, the black finish) is a decent starter rifle. The chamber is perhaps generously sized with a bit much in the way of freebore, but it is a decent starting point. The 1-12 twist barrel will stabilze bullet up to 175 gr with no difficulty. Someone...

    nightforce recticle ---HELP ME CHOOSE

Well, started out with the NP 1RR recticule years back, got used to it and don't like anything else now. Go figure. I'll hold off for elevation if the wind is up and really switching fast, don't have to release my hold on the rifle to adjust anything. Haven't lost the recticule against a...

Help me build an f-class rifle.

While traveling I competed in F/TR with a borrowed rifle. A very accurate .308 but it was a vintage Dunlap (yes, actually stocked by Dunlap himself) highpower rifle, perfect for shooting slung up. Beautiful rifle. Shooting off a bipod and rear bag the form factor of the rifle did not suit me at...

F-Class "Swedish style" and twist for Norma 6,5 VLD?

Stefan - I shoot 139 gr Lapua Scenars at 2950 fps out of a 1-9 twist Lothar Walther (match program barrel) with no problems, the current barrel is my third LW on this receiver chambered for 6.5 X 284. The barrels have been extremely uniform and extremely accurate. I would thing either a 1-9 or...

    Don't you need a 60x scope at 1000yds???

I would not use a fixed power scope for long range competition. Once the temps are over 90, the humidity over 80%, and the mirage running hard something like a fixed power 45X would pretty much be useless at 1,000 (especially if you were to be shooting off of your belly). Say what you like...

    Velocity spread Continued

Put is like this, a 50 fps difference in velocity, depending on the BC can result in a greater than 1 moa vertical at 1,000 yards. I'd stick with the load with the better numbers.
