Bushnell Elite 6500 vs Sightron SIII

I've got four Leupold 6.5-20s - all 30mm LR models, incl. one 40mm obj., two 50mm target models, and a Mk4 M1 LRT. They're fine scopes, and I'm glad I own them, but with all the new stuff coming out in the past year or so, I decided I'd like to try some of it. Bought an Elite 6500 2.5-16x42...

    Tool Grinding

Phantom... The outfit I've bought extra holders from most recently is CDCO Machinery Corp. in Schaumburg, Ill. Try www.cdcotools.com One of the last batch of BXA holders I got from them is ground incorrectly, because to tighten it in the QC toolpost, the handle winds up pointed towards the...

    Tool Grinding

henrya.... I bought one of the T15 insert kits from Warner not long after I got my lathe - got the 1/4" holders so I could also use them on Dad's old Atlas lathe. I've had fairly good results with them, but Warner makes their T15 inserts with a rather oddball hold down screw size, and I've not...

    Full length sizing

Tod, It's plumb simple to check your case dimension at the shoulder (IOW, the headspace dim.) with a Stoney Pt. (now Hornady) headspace kit and a digital caliper. I always check the headspace of sized cases vs. fired cases when setting up a FL die in the press; this is especially important since...

    Tool Grinding

As an illustration to the truth of phantom496's post above: I used to spend 30 min. or more digging through 5gal. plastic buckets full of surplus/used lathe tools every time I'd visit a surplus yard in Wichita. There were hand-ground tools of every description in those buckets - the purpose for...

    Match Primers

I bought a case each of the Wolf LRM & SRM primers from PV a few months ago, because they were out of the std. primers in each size. German Salazar says the only difference between Wolf's std. & magnum primers is the that the mag primers have a slightly thicker cup. So far, I've used the LRMs...

    1/16" or 1/8" dot for 1000yd scope

The Sightron SIII 8-32x56 LR-D I used a couple of weeks ago in a 1000yd. any/any LR prone match has a 1/4 min. dot that worked fine with the LR target's 44" dia. black bull. I wouldn't want to go with a smaller dot for target work where the bull is black, but would go with a fine duplex like...

    Choices.....

Dave, In reply to your post about problems with the 6x47's small primer case - I do see larger ES & SD numbers on cool/cold days with my 6x47s vs. what I'm used to seeing with Dashers. I've got no-turn necks on my 6x47 & Dasher reamers - .273" on the x47, and .274" on the Dasher. There is the...

    Choices.....

The Dasher (or a BRX) would be head-and-shoulders above the other two cartridges you listed for your stated purpose. I've built myself a couple of Dashers, and it's just a dandly little cartridge - very accurate, very efficient, very pleasant to shoot, with good barrel life. Fireform loads are...

    6 Brx ??

I initially used a Redding tapered expander button that replaces the stock expander on the decapping/expander spindle of my Dasher die. IIRC, doing it this way meant I had to go clear up to a .264" neck. I finally bought a Sinclair expander die with a .257" mandrel, figuring it's a little easier...

Jewel Trigger on a Win 52D?

Jim, I sent my 52D triggers to Karl Kenyon to have him modify them, and honestly feel they're both about as good as the Anschutz (5071 IIRC) on my 1611 prone rifle. That's high praise - I really like the Anschutz. Karl charged $135 each to do the work - and I feel I got my money's worth. If...

    Carbide vs steel

I started threading with the same top-notch inserts Tony Z talks about, and agree that these Kennametal inserts (both threading & grooving) are a good way to go. I just used a reground grooving insert yesterday to turn grooves into the surfaces of several bedding pillars. I've also got Iscar...

    Re-Chambering tricks

Bob, I've fireformed around 1200 Dasher cases using the false shoulder method in four different rifles. The only real difference between the Dasher & BRX is the shoulder angle, so there shouldn't be any reason why the false shoulder method won't work just as well for your cartridge. I've had no...

Chinese made lathe - never/ever, he said

Many of the folks who've dealt with the chicoms say that - to a certain extent - you get what you pay for from them, same as with anyone else. If you're a HF-type seller wanting dirt-cheap retail chain store tools, that's what they'll make for you. If you're someone wanting to sell higher...

    Good Review of Grizzly G4003G

Just received the June/July issue of Machinist's Workshop in the mail today, and found a good reveiw of Grizzly's G4003G gunsmithing lathe by Steve Acker. Steve's book The Gunsmith Machinist is a good read, as are his monthly articles in this magazine. As a bonus, a complete copy of "Rollie's...

Importance of foot brake on lathe

Most of the newer/smaller lathes typical of the size used for gunsmithing don't have clutches, so the motor stops each time the brake is applied. The footbrake on my JET was wired to stop the motor and require the apron switch to be cycled through another off/on cycle to restart. Then we...

    6BR and 4320?

IMR 4064's got fairly large kernals, which makes it somewhat like 4831 to run through a powder measure. I've never seen or handled 4320 - what's it like in this regard?

    Which Scope ???

I didn't ask JSC, but Sightron said they were expecting another shipment of 50 units within a couple of weeks. I think JSC took only 15 of the scopes in the first 50-unit shipment; don't know whether they'll take more this time or not.

    Which Scope ???

James.... JSC in Forest City, Pa. had them for $660, dealer/wholesale. I may not care for the dot reticle, but that's more of a personal/subjective thing - we'll see how it works out.

    Which Scope ???

Yo - I ordered the last two Sightron 8-32x56 LR Ds that JSC had early yesterday morning. It won't be long before I'll have a review to post. At 24.7oz., they're almost 10oz. lighter than a Nightforce - hope they'll stand up to the recoil of a 284 & 180 Bergers in a 15lb. rifle.
