You may ask why does this suck

The 20 shot 5.5mm ctc group outdoors at 25m.

It sucks because it was the last 20 pellets of a tin of 7.9g Cometas from 2010. No chance I'll find another.
Dan

No more Cometas

That does suck, but the consistency is fantastic.Hope to see you at Holbrook.

On the bright side Dan, if there was a world record for ES, that has to come pretty close :)

Brian

Pellets are so important to consistent velocities, and it isn't the consistency of weight that matters. I shot some 8.4 pellets just before this string, they had a consistent 15fps spread.
I've been on a quest to find good shooting 8.4s for the last year. All of my barrels prefer the 7.9s or 13.4s over the 8.4s.

When the weather warms up a bit Dan I'll be following you on your quest. Up to now I've always found AA Field 8.4's to be the best, but my experience is limited. The 7.9's are next on the hit list as the 13.4's are out for us.

The LW choked barrel I had fitted on the Rapid is showing much promise, as always, need to find the right pellet for it.

Out of interest, those 20 pellets you shot, were they straight out of the tin or had they been sized, lubed etc?

Brian

Straight from the tin.

Dan that is the tightest 20 shot string I have seen for sure. I see 5 and 6 fps spreads over 25 shots. Less than 2 fps is just a dream. ... KR, H.

I wonder what 3 unopened tins of 2010 Cometa pellets are worth?

I've been on a quest to find good shooting 8.4s for the last year.

I have only ever had one decent batch in 2003 when there was more emphasis on producing a good pellet rather than producing as fast as can.
I have numerous batches that cant even get a chrono reading within 70ft/sec but thats only part of the story behind poor grouping.

Sizing on the tin usually is no resemblance to whats actually within, i have only ever come across three batches thats as described on the label. Most measure 4.47 to 4.48 regardless, even the one batch that weighed from 7.4gr to 8.8gr same tin. I have much worse really soul destroying knowing cant do a thing about it. Begged, stole, bought and borrowed everything i could get hold of since 2005 to 2008, no joy. Best of them a shotgun would group far better, no joke measured in several inches.
Even went through 7 different barrels 5 yrs ago hoping to find a less fussy barrel, all showed same symptoms.
I am coming to the end of a reasonable batch then frustration time again and expense.

Frankly i am at a loss what makes a good pellet apart from decent weight spread and sizing consistency but do have to size the skirts 4.5.
JSB know when they make a good batch. Theyre given to sponsored shooters, i have ended up with four batches all superb, Express and Exact straight from the tin.

Jon, even the FWB800 doesn't shoot 8.4 well?

How's that gun working out? Anybody going to campaign one in either BR or UK FT this season?

That's astounding.

How long did the Cometa branded pellets last in the States, 2 or 3 years, 2009, 2010 and 2011?

Were the Cometa's supposedly a different die like the the AA's?

The good Cometas were different. The punch used inside the skirt was pointed, the later pellets had a truncated cone shaped punch. I used the good Cometas at the Worlds, I didn't know better at the time. See Bill you should taken my offer of two tins of Cometas;)

My MFR (Leupy BSA barrel) @ 12 ftlbs shoots well with both AA & JSB 8.44gr (4.52) but best with CP 7.9gr (boxed).

Not much in it though.

The pellet chase is frustrating. In my experience a good tin of unsorted pellets will easily out shoot sorted pellets from a poor tin. At one time Crosman premier pellets were the best. Their quality slid and now jsb has the best. I can't say for certain whether they may be getting complacent regarding quality but if they do who is there to take over the role of best?
I would gladly pay $50-100 for a tin of pellets if they could average 249+ indoors @25y. I've often wondered about the possibility of lathe turned pellets.

Dan,

That's extremely impressive!

What we as a collective group should do is try to convince our friends at Vogel Pellets (made in the U.S.A.) to start making a version of their Match grade wadcutter pellets, only as a round nose. They could keep them at the same weight, or, better yet, go the distance and still offer both the lighter ±8 grain pellets for our 12fpe LV guns, plus add a 10 grain version for our 20fpe HV guns.

They claim to already be making the worlds best, most consistent wadcutter pellets, which sell for ±$13.00/500, so other than for them having to get a set of round nose dies made, how much of a jump could it be to also offer a round nose version, that is other than for that initial set-up charge?

Between our small group of a few thousand BR shooters world-wide along with the much larger group of several thousand FT shooters, I would think they would find it might be worth their while!

By the way, I think I remember something about SG saying he's already been in contact with them, so the idea has already been planted and may just needs a strong support system to become a reality.

Let's hope so!

Yeah Vogel is supposedly working on roundnose but he is having some issues that may delay it. In the meantime I will pursue machining as an option.
