Wind Meter

Is a wind meter worth acquiring for short range benchrest (100-200 yards). If it is, which features are recommended ??? Thanks for your response.

In a word "NO"...windflags and snuffy tails or surveyors tape...and lots of time watching them while shooting...;)

Not Really

All a windmeter tells you is what is going on where it is sitting. That is not of much use down range.

But, these little devices are a neat way to see just how bad things are. At several Matches last year, John Horn had a little hand held thing that told the velocity ebb and flow. At Seymour, I remember it would gust from 10 to 25 mph in a matter of seconds. That explains some of the groups that were shot........jackie

I use one almost every match

I use a windmeter at almost every match.

I write the match reports for BRCentral and our clubs newsletter. So during one of the breaks in the match I will measure the wind so I can say "wind was gusting to 10 mph"

That's about all they are good for.

I can see the value of knowing how a given wind velocity affects the particular tails on your wind flags. Coming from 1000 yd Palma shooting where it's not unusual to put 15 minutes of windage on a rear sight, I was surprised at how much the wind affected the 6mm bullets at 100yds. Mis-judging wind velocity by 5 mph can put you off the paper at 1000yds.

So, once you know how your particular tails respond to wind velocity you can better determine how much the bullet will move in that short distance. That said, the wind meter probably has more utility in practice sessions than match use.

Maybe if someone came up with remote sensors that transmitted wind data to a bench display and coupled that with an automatic firing device that would activate the trigger when wind values were at user defined parameters we could sit back and drink suds while the rifles fired themselves. :D
