why i don't use Google

i tried to google 'sorting bullets by bearing surface' and the auto completion feature first suggested i 'sort bullets alphabetically'. does this enhance accuracy at all? i mean, should i be loading Hornady and then Sierra? what happens if i skip Nosler?

That took about 10 seconds to get several pages worth of useful links. Using BR Central's search function would take you (well, me) about ten minutes. That's because I can't figure out how to get an "and" search, even with trying the usual techniques. So what's presented for you to look through are all posts with any of the words "bullet" "bearing" "surface" and "sorting".

If anyone knows how to get an "and" with the search function in V-bulletin, let me know! (& yes, I tried to "search" for just that).

Google has done away with the Advanced Search it used to have, unless you've got an account, and since I do not, I am not sure it even exists there anymore. However, the structure still works.

Take Charles example and make it look like this:

Now it will actually limit all results to those found on the domain benchrest.com

There are many modifiers you can use. + can be used along with words in double quotes to specify exact text searches, etc. Google advanced google search and you'll probably find more than you ever wanted to know about searching the web.
 
I refuse to use anything Google. They have linked in with this administration and have had many investigations and concerns over storage of data and spying, etc.

Sorry for the dip into politics.
 
Got to agree with Mr Shaw and Al, I'd rather not know than use a Google search for anything except the most innocuous things. Too much stuff is considered to be "terrorism" or "terrorism related" these days, aside from me and my smart mouth (and/or fingers on the keyboard) likely having me on someone's fecal roster already.

To get to the advance search function on Google click on the little gear shaped thingy in the upper right corner. It is next to the sign in button but you do not need to sign in or have an account to use the advance functions.

Turn off the auto suggestion and just type in what you want. You can use " " in order to make it mandatory for you words exactly as you type them.

In order to turn off auto suggestion you have to allow cookies. I don't allow cookies on Google.

James thats interesting. I went to check and see and I can turn the auto on or off and it dosent ask or show any warnings about cookies.
Where is the cookie setting you refer to?

I block google cookies from within my web browser under privacy settings.
In IE that would be internet options, privacy tab, sites. Block Google.com, it seems like there are some others related to Google but at the moment I don't recall what they are.

Mozilla Firefox:

Tools > options > privacy

Check box stopping sites from tracking you.

Edit:

Believe Chrome (a Google search engine) has similar settings -- if you trust Google to block Google...And they probably do, to stay in compliance with the laws...

James, thanks for the tip on that gear gizmo. I never would have clicked on that. Mainly because I do NOT click on anything I don't recognize when I'm on the web, and I mean nothing. I'm one of the very few people who doesn't receive spam mail even tho I have addresses > 10 years old.

ad.doubleclick.net is one of the domains you guys are looking for. Just look through your cookies and you'll see plenty more of em. adbureau.net, adyieldmanager.com, etc.
 
You can enable or disable cookies going to browser menu
tools->internet option->privacy then change status of cookies.
 
Ok, anyone have any suggestions about avoiding Google? My local internet provider is now using a version of G Mail. Pretty much the same as gmail. It is a fact, that everything that has ever gone thru the google search engine is retained in their storage, that is everything. I have heard that they have more storage capacity than the government, and they do coperate with the gubiment. Boy it is big brother for sure. I think it is time to be very careful about what you say on public forums. We are so close to a pure socialist government it is scary. The race for president is already over. Obummer has over a billion dollars in his war chest. They can go back in a canidates files and find where he pissed on a campfire. That is why Cain dropped out. Ron Paul is next and then Newt. They can go back and dig up stuff that happened 25-30 years ago. Just wait they will get Mitt also. Course not one can dig up anything on the ilegal alien in the white house as he has done nothing, for the most part and covered up the rest. Money always wins in the long run and Obummer has Sorus, and the head of Progessive Insurance plus a bunch of other high dollar liberals in his pocket. I will give the USA aoubt 5 more years before we are a pure socialist state. :mad:

I doubt you can avoid it all, but you can do things. There are many email providers, you don't have to use the one your IP uses. You can block many of the tracking cookies, as well as ads.
