Who said it was a Junkers JU88?

I think you will find that this is a Heinkel He115. I was told the JU88 had a radiator in front of their V12 motors.

Ted,
It was posted on this forum about a month ago and was told it was a Junkers 88. I now know it is a Heinkel 115.

Butch! It looks like a aircraft, stop digging a hole.

If it Quacks it's a ......

Actually one of the German WWII twin-engined bombers DID have liquid cooled engines with round, radial looking nacelles or cowls (??). I'll dig a pic up if it doesn't rile the roosters.

If nothing else, the nose is all wrong to be a Ju-88. Unless it's some one-off "wonder weapon". The Nazi's were big on that kind of thing. Gee-whiz stuff that wasn't practical from a war-making perspective.

Yep. As someone said, they were V-12s. They were inverted. I don't know why they have round nacelles a'la a radial engine vice the form-fitting nacelle of the Mosquito.

I did some quick Google-ing. Saw one story that said that American engineers consulted in its design. Never heard that before.

To me these old planes are beautiful, and since I live 2 miles from the Warhawk Museum its even cooler to see and hear the old ones fly, 2 saturdays ago we had P-40's a couple of P-51's and a Mitchell bomber overhead of our house! I didn't get anything done that day, because as they fly over the house it is a sound and sight to behold.
Thanks for putting up this picture.

...and keeping up the American connection theme, it looks like the roots of that BMW 801 was, ta da, the Pratt and Whitney Hornet. history is full of little interesting connections.

The only thing that sounds better than a passing Merlin powered P-51 Mustang is the sound of a politician being attacked by a lion.

Agreed !
Last summer while fishing on the shores of Lake Michigan here in Wisconsin, I heard an engine of an aircraft that was unmistakable. Suddenly...here comes a mustang perhaps a few hundred feet over the water ! What a beautiful sight. Don't know what it was doing around here, but the Merlin sound is like no other.
