Not a Merlin in a P-51 or a Spitfire, but the drone of four Wright Cyclones from a med altitude B-17 is pretty fetching also....

I stop whatever I am doing and look skyward. They come infrequently on there way to Beale or Travis AFB for the shows.....

My youngest son was based out of Beale AFB for 19 of his 21yrs. He was with the U2 program for all but 1 year of his 21. He was with the A10s in the middle east.
I do believe that a radial recip engine is a real sweet sound. For some reason out in my part of the country we see a lot of the old T6 trainers. I love them.
