Anyone catch the first episode of the new show Topshot?

I have it DVRd and have watched half.
I dont like the format.
It is about like survivor or something.
I mean how do you decide who the BEST shot is by VOTING people off of a team.

I can't think of a better summary than this!!!!!!!

I thought it was a little slice of life. Big macho guy brags himself up, elects himself an authority, takes over, then fails miserably. Meanwhile, the quiet, skinny kid gets teamed up on because his only sin was being born later than everyone else. But when macho man has a shoot off with the kid, the kid cleaned his clock and proved his worth to the team and sent the braggart packing.
I also liked the cowboy sense of the cowboy in his voting off of the macho man's cheerleader. It was a surprise vote but made perfect sense. You can't fool a cowboy!

I agree with this. It also seemed to me that there was way too much machismo displayed in the contestants. Not every gun owner or competitive shooter is as in-your-face and outspoken as this group... Then again, it wouldn't be much of a show if someone showed up and simply said "Yeah... I've been target shooting for awhile now. Hopefully I'll win."

I absolutely loved it! MT Rifles-Mac Tilton has furnished this young man a rifle and he has used it to be a very competitive shooter. I believe he is from British Columbia. Hopefully he will continue to show them how the cow ate the cabbage.

More like Kent, WA.

The format isn't what a lot of people expected... but I imagine the producers were catering to a little larger market than hard core competitive gun nuts to begin with.

One of the cast posted over on another forum... apparently the 'practice' session was kind of a joke, somewhere between one and five rounds per gun per shooter. Not exactly the way it looked after edited for TV...

The one thing I wondered about is this...
When they went to compete with a particular gun was that gun sighted in for them? Or was it just randomly set and they just had to make due?

Sounded like they sighted in (as much as you can in that few shots), and tried to keep track of which gun was which thereafter. Not sure if the gun they got at the actual stage was the same one they 'shot' during sight-in or not.

From what I saw, it appears they shot different guns for each phase. Some had good spotters, while others need an extended course in same.

I didn't think anyone could ever make "gunners" look so gay...... They were so cute in their little red shirts, oh and shooting at each others names.... Diz is right! Jack C

Monte, He did go to the U. Of Washington. Below is an interesting post on the young man.

As a few of you know, I work for MT Guns, a target rifle outfit.

Early last year we built what is basically a Palma rifle for a 21 year old University of Washington Engineering student, Kelly Bachand.

Mac Tilton, my boss--have I said this too many times?--graduated from Trinidad in '58, and, as far as I can tell, knows everyone in target shooting.

I'm not clear of the details, but Kelly had been suggested as a young man who needed a rifle.

He took that rifle to Canada, and came home with a table full of trophies, and a Canadian National Championship.

This is prone, iron sights, 300-900 meters if I remember correctly.

The rifle we built him is our stock in trade; a Barnard action, I'm not certain whether it was a True-Flight or a Barltlein barrel, in .308, and notably a Warner #2 rear sight.

(Hi Alan!)

This post has little, I expect, to do with what our Accurate Reloading Gunsmithing site is all about: Fine custom Mausers built for those who will take them to Africa, where, perhaps, they mainly belong: on Safari.

Don't get me wrong.

I adore Mausers, and I adore fine wood and rust bluing.

But "Gunsmithing" is a big umbrella, and has to include target rifles.

Anyway... not only did Kelly kick a little ass in Canada, but he did well enough to come to the attention of the producers of the History Channel show, "Top Shot."

I expect some of us have been watching this.

I don't own a televison--what's up with that?--but have just watched the first episode on the internet.

My suspicion is that the producers knew just what they were doing in casting a skinny Washington kid with a library tan.

Kelly doesn't much throw his hands on his hips and his shoulders back to give lectures.

He can read the wind--I guess hunters do this too?--and knows his come-ups from 200 to 400 to 600 yards.

I don't know the results, but I do know that if you watch "Top Shot," you're gonna be seeing a lot of Kelly Bachand.

He earned every minute of this, by busting his butt in juniors programs, shooting on the US Juniors team, and, well, just pure talent.

I don't know why my boss decided to give this rifle to Kelly Bachand, but I do know it couldn't have gone to anyone better.

I just wonder if the script isn't made for the shooters like a lot of the other "reality shows". Most of the shooters I know don't talk like they do on the show. It's almost stilted.

First I've heard of this is it a new television series? and what channel or channels does it come on? Thanks!

The thing I noticed about the shooter that got voted off is that after he couldn't hit the 100yd target he almost missed the pistol shot that cast his vote and then he couldn't hit a 400yd target to save his ass.
They got rid of the right shooter and they did it at the best time.
That would be hard to live with, screwing up that bad on TV.

Ya know... I've seen a few people comment on his shot when making the vote. Do you really think that under the circumstances - just let your team down, you're most likely getting voted off yourself, and you're on camera... that you'd do any better? I'm guessing he was under just a wee bit of strain at the time. Yes, he flubbed the rifle stage... but there's no point in flogging the poor guy about everything and anything. YMMV

Butch,
After filming the show, Kelly and his grandpa spent the morning and afternoon here at the ranch. It was a pleasure to meet and talk to both of them. Kelly helped me with my prone shooting, and also got the chance to shoot my rimfire rifle at an ARA target and did very well. He's bright, humble and passionate about his shooting. Kelly was not allowed to talk about the show and wish him success.
