Throws em' Too Far

My new Bat action wants to throw empties too far, like 6+ feet. As the gun does double duty as a varminter it makes the empties hard to find in the field. I wouldn't think that this would be a good situation for a BR shooter, bouncing brass off the guy to your right.
Can this be remedied?

And

Bat are the people to call, getting through can sometimes be timely, but they are very good with helping customers with problems.

However, the fix is in the spring tension. It is a simple matter of installing a spring with less tension in compression. You might have to experiment with different ones to get the cases to fall just right. Sometimes there is a fine line between just right and not good enough. Once you get it right, though, it will pretty much stay there........jackie

I took the spring out very carefully not to have it go zinging of into space:eek: and cut a coil off the end one at a time until I got the right tension, I like my brass to just roll out of the ejector port. Not a hard job, I used side cutters.

flying springs

I've done the same as Dan H on several of these too without a problem. I like my brass to go a little further though, but that's a personal thing which you can certainly control. Go easy, it's always easier to take off more coils then to add them back.

One thing I really recommend is to drive out the pin that holds that spring while holding the bolt inside of a giant ziplock bag. There is an excellent chance the spring will come flying out of there the first (and second and maybe third) time you do it.

Good luck

Woody,
That is a heck of an idea, thanks.

I cannot believe that thought never crossed my mind.

Here's an additional benefit. The use of a bag when doing this has increased the harmony in my house by quite a bit.

The stream of profanity emanating from the basement whenever I was tuning one of these springs got me in trouble with the Mrs. on several occasions. I tried to drown out the choice words by cranking up Stevie Ray Vaughan to about 110 db. No good, she still heard me above both “Voodoo Child” and “Texas Flood”.

Now I can fling that sucker around all day long and know where it went. No cussin’, no frantic calls to BAT for replacement springs and plungers, no skinned knees from crawling around on a concrete floor looking for missing parts.

I’d rather save the aggravation for something more important – like dealing with a late switch on that down range flag, or trying to figure out my teenaged son, or watching the market and deciding if I want a new barrel or groceries.

Try White Boy Blues. "Can't Quit You Baby" should do the job.
