That first barrel

Peter, I can say in all certainty, I have not seen this with my new Barrel. My last barrel was shot out to the point of no return. However it will still shoot 250's and an occasional 19x match. Skip Plumber refered to it as " Smooth like a gravel driveway".. I have seen several of our friends and competitors seem to suffer from barrel envy. Is it the barrel or the action? Is it we knew what worked before and cant let it go and start over? I think if more time was spent on forgetting what worked and focus on what is working will help. We all know some place between 2900 - 3050 with minimal shooting we can hone in on an area the gun starts talking. Then , no matter if its close to or even the same as the last barrel, Do Not think everything will work the same. Starting over from scatch really helped my current set up. Never looked at any previous notes. I am now at the fine tune, to my abilities. I dont know enough about loads or tunes to make it work better, I can make it worse with ease.

I did reglue the action after this rebarrel. Its all apart anyway, so I thought it would be a good idea. Alot could be we expect magic from a new barrel, Maybe the old one wasnt a problem ? Maybe we just depend on the abilities of these articles of machining geneous to much, or, wont let ourselve believe in them at all. Some were along the way we need to know when or when not to pull the trigger.

My thinking has gone to the platform I guess although those who have 30 barrels with notes and use them according to whatever their notes tell them must have platforms ( Actions in stocks ) that are sound.

I don't know but I can think of a few folks who have experienced a pretty big letdown when their second barrel didn't do what their first one did. I was mostly thinking completely new rifles and don't remember if I said that origionally. There doesn't seem to be much agreement so I must be all wet on this one. I am pretty sure I have seen it over the years with my rifles and even with the those that are screwed in. Thanks to all for replying.

Just had a weight system issue in my rifle. Weight tubes came loose and were slamming around inside against the pistol grip area. Not a good accuracy enhancer as you can tell from my last 2-3 matches. Could here something when tapping the stock into the rear bag at times.. Just took me a while to find it as they would wedge into position at times, like when I took off the butt plate to look at them. I looked again and everything had slid forward 2" .. at 1 pound + a few oz. each.. thats a whole bunch of bad.. My point is, yes a platform / be it bedding or even location of action in stock when bedding are all factors in accuracy. I would say that a 1 screw glue in could be tweaked enough to change center line of barrel and action in stock and cause all kinds of trouble, that leading to what you refer to as a "Bad Second Barrel ". Not to mention over aplication of anti seize on threads / hydraulic not full contact friction seating of barrel to face of action in some cases, or just plain musceling things to the point the bedding cracks under the action with no notice. I would say those who change barrels alot on their own know enough to pay attention to detail. If all the steps are not followed when changing a barrel, why bother ? Have a gunsmith or someone who can check the little things that drive us crazy do the install.

Here is something to seriously consider.
Is it possible by whatever means that when the barrel is taken on and off of the action, may or may not matter the make, that we are torquing the action just a little too much and maybe taking it out of sync, square or whatever term you want to call it.

As this thread shows its way to common and frequent.
We have seen all kinds of assumptions but no one has ever mentioned the actually being altered some how.

How many have put the first barrel back on just to find out its not shooting any better than the second?

I know a lot of guys who get a great barrel and then put them up for the big matches then at the matches talk about how great it was when they first tried it out.

Not everyone has this issue but many do.
Just a thought.
