Hi I am considering buying a Savage 10FP in .308 but I am not sure which barrel length would be the best a 20" or a 24"? I currently own a Savage 10 FP in .223 with a 20" barrel in Choate Stock and it is a tack driver! I would mostly be shooting at 100 to 225 yards. The Savage 2009 catalog does not offer the 10 FP, .308, 20" barrel with the standard stock. It is only offered with a 24" barrel. Any comments would be greatly appreciated. I was always told the shorter, heavier barrels are more accurate. Would I loose any accuracy with a 24" over a 20" barrel?

Thanks

I had one with the 20" barrel and it was very accurate. It liked Sierra and Nosler Competition bullets with IMR 4064. I replaced it with a 30BR barrel since I already had another .308 that shot even better. Its a Tikka T3. The barrel on that rifle is as good as the 30BR. If I were to get another factory rifle with the intent of turning it into a target rifle, it would be a Tikka HV SS in .222 or .308 and cut and crown the barrel to 20".

24 is best, better velocity and balance.............Don

barrels

The 308 does have the capacity to make use of a 24 inch barrel.Since the primary use will be short range paper punching, (not carrying it around), I would go with it. ........jackie

Greetings. I'd go with the 24" barrel. Here's my 10FCP (24"), what a sweetheart!

Shorter barrel length reduces the amplification of shot deflection due to shooter movement. 1/100th inche movement at moment of firing causes an on target deflection of 1 inch. Shorter barrel more manuverable and stiffer. Police snipers use some 18" 20" etc. allows use of suppressor. Get a 24" try 22" length for the .308. If want 20" then chop to that length.

Get the 24" barrel

Think of it as free extra feet per second for the life of the gun. The 24" length is actually kind of short for long range use, but I have 2 of these guns and they shoot well out to 1000 yards with 175 grain Sierra MatchKings.

The 20" barrel was supposedly made to allow urban police use with ease of getting it in and out of the patrol cars. Works but at a permanent cost of feet per second which equates to less energy available on target (ie bad guy).

Tikka barrel

SteveB: Your comments on the Tikka barrel got my attention. I recently had a new ( unfired) Tikka 1-10, 308, set-back, rechambered ( 308) and fitted to one of my blueprinted Rem. 700s', so it's now a switch-barrel; 6BR to 308. Before the g'smith did the work, I scoped it with my "Hawkeye", and the bore looked like my Shilen, Hart, etc. barrels. Have 130 rds. thru it now, and fouling is the least of any of my match-grade rifles: clean out the powder, no copper, just a trace of carbon & that comes out with a few passes of JB. The Tikka has raised my respect level for hammer forged barrels.:)
