Salt-Batch Nitriding barrels for extended barrel life

"It is impossible for the gas to be circulated through the bore of the barrel. Also Nitreg provides no corrosion protection for your barrel"-- That is entirely false.
Any questions on nitriding feel free to ask me. Nitreg is without a doubt the best way to go.

So melonite QPQ is the way to go?

How long would this process extend barrel life on a 6PPC used for target shooting ?
Has anyone used it for overbore cartridges such as the .220 Swift or the .257 Weatherby and kept record count to see how much extra life you can get out a barrel?

Hal

HAl,

I had a barrel done back in 09. It is a PacNor 1-18 chambered in 30-284 X 1.165" or minimum HBR capacity. From my notes, after it was treated, it took .03g more powder to get to the same accuracy level it was at prior to the coating. I have shot perhaps 700 rounds through it. Having had, at one time, 5 HBR rifles, this one was not one of my favorites because of it's port location. I just looked inside it with my borescope and there is no evidence of firecracking and the bore is bright from having been JB'd recently. Looks to me as if the process is a credible one.

I just wonder what all this does to the vibration of a barrel. If this process makes the barrel steel harder wouldnt it vibrate faster? Faster doesnt seem better to me? Just thinking!! Lee

To this day this has left me a several engineers dumbfounded!

From what a friend of mine told me who is a metallurgist the molecular expansion and contraction coefficients for this process are sensitive to chromium levels in the steel.
Andy.

Not sure if hardening the barrel would cause more vibration.. Anyone have anything similiar done to there barrel, know what case depth / hrc ?

Also controlled gas nitriding over QPQ

I think gas nitriding has to be done at a temp. that would anneal the barrel. I believe the Melonite QPQ is about 2 mil thickness. It is around 62RC on SS and 68RC on cm. I have had several done and it has not affected good or bad on accuracy. Have a mediocre barrel done and it will remain mediocre. I have only noticed about 10FPS increase in velocity. That could be caused by temp. or humidity changes. Just not enough to concern me.
