S.D. winter barrel break in proceedure.

"It'll never work!"
Here's the local forecast for my part of 'The Forbidden Zone':

Areas of blowing snow and a chance of snow, mainly before 9am. Cloudy, with a high near 19. Blustery, with a north northwest wind between 10 and 20 mph, with gusts as high as 30 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%. Wind chill factors of -20 degrees probable.

I'd like to be at the range breaking in the barrel for my 30BR 'Snake in the Grass' gun (the one in the 'Bolt Timing' thread) but weather like this is a bit crisp to be cleaning outside.

So I've been driving a couple of miles to a old abandoned farm place, firing one round and heading back home to clean the barrel..then repeating the process. Wipe Out Foam works really well for this...I just fill the bore with it and patch after an hour, then fill it again and patch out the blue goo (copper) the next day and fire another one. The Wipe Out doesn't stink up the place like Butches does...it's pretty neat stuff if you're not in a hurry.

Am thinkin' it might be a l-o-n-g Winter........

Well it is 24* and snowing...

here on the benches in Sandy, UT. The truck is packed and we'll be heading to Phoenix within the hour...damn I am tired of blowing snow. Had to do alot of twice a day blowing in the last three weeks. We've had almost 40" of snow here at the house since 12/1. Al, I'll be thinking about you as I'm pulling the trigger!

Happy New Year,

Jim

Man, i am so glad to live here in Iowa instead of SD. 30 degrees, and the trees were covered with hoar frost this am-postcard picture stuff. It was 60 degrees inside the building Keith and i shot out of yesterday PM.:p:p

Happy New Year Al

Al, if you can keep your vehicle running ,try turning up the defroster full blast and place your solvent bottle on the dash board. It shouldn't freeze up that way.If your wet patch freezes solid before you can run it through the barrel it's probably too cold outside to be shooting, but a hair dryer duct taped to your gun stock(providing you have electricity available)and blowing right at your bore guide should keep things manageable.

I think it got down to a bitter cold 51 degrees here in Houston today, the sun shined as well.
They are forecasting 68 degrees for New Years Day.
I plan on going up to Tomball and shoot, I sure hope I can stand the frigid conditions.:D..........jackie

Tomball Weather

Johnny Jones and I got some bench time in at Tomball today.

We had to shot in some really tough conditions. 65+ degrees
and a challenging 6 mph wind coming in from the southeast and
the sun was out to boot.

All kidding aside it was a good day to get out and enjoy Benchrest
shooting ....Vic

Try breaking in a new yote gun and doing dome load development @ -15 degrees celcius. That is where 1/2 moa is thrown out the window and you hope for 2 moa yote gun...............................................

Austin, TX Weather

Today we shot our afternoon match at 72 degrees. That's a plus 72 degrees. Read it and weep !!! A great way to end the year. Happy New Year to All.

We went to Phoenix - -

On the 22 nd and came back yesterday. It was COLD all week there. Went to Tombstone on last thursday and there was ice in the puddles and I had to wear gloves all the time I was there. ( So much for a Winter vacation ! ).

It is snowing today here (Maine) 8" to 12" they are saying and another 8" forecast for tomorrow. Must be a Global Warming thing; no doubt it is a real thing, eh ?

Perfect weather to test wind flag stands. Happy New Year all. Regards, Chuck
