Hi Larry.

Currently, there are two mfgs. that offer suitable new-in-the-box scopes for HBR use:
- Leupold's FXIII
- Burris' HBR2

Both are quality products. -Al

I have both brands. Started with an old Weaver T6 with a TINY (Ackerman?) dot......wasn't as clear as I am used to. (my VFS units wear Leupold Comp.)
Got a Burris w/ dot ....clearer sight picture, shot better...but no cigar.
Got a Leupold Comp. 6x w/ dot from BRC classifieds....and a world of difference in clarity and my scores improved dramatically.
I fully believe clarity is more important in Hunter class than VFS....the mothball's outer edge must be sharp, not a blurr.
I find the dot much easier to center in the mothball than the FCH.

Al described the best

ones available as new in the box. Of those, I would have to agree w/ LH on the Leupold. That said, I seriously suggest you look around for a steel T-6 that you can buy at under $200 and then send it to Bill Ackerman and have it blueprinted and his tiny dot reticle put in it. I know that many people have had issues w/ their T-6's, but I doubt they were fully BP'd by Ackerman. And as far as clarity, especially of the reticle, a good T-6 will be every bit as clear as ANY other scope out there. And they are darn near bullet-proof. That is NOT to say they don't also break - eventually. There is NO scope made that is internally adjustable that will hold up to the pounding we subject them to in the HBR game. They will ALL eventually break. The key is how long does it take. ANd I have found the steel T-6's to be the most reliable scopes I have owned.

Yoy can see the ten ring on a Hunter target with a 6 power scope?

6 X scopes

I have had a lot of 6 X scopes over the past 10 years and I am of the opinion that the 3 Sightrons I have are the best 6 power scopes I have owned to date. I have a new style Leup with a Premier dot in it and don't like it as well as the Burris or Sightrons I have. It's a shame that Sightron quit making the 6X. Guess we should have bought more of them , aye? Of the two brands still available new, I prefer the Burris. I have had super luck with the Burris' I have owned. Only one out of perhaps 10 of them that gave me any problems. It got frozen!

That said, I have two frozen 6 power scopes and am anxiously waiting for a good set of adjustable mounts with small click value turrets in them. That will be the answer.
