Rebating cases

I am in the process of rebating a bunch of BR cases from BR size to 220 Russian size. I have the rims turned down and have started re-cutting the groves. I am using what looks like a parting tool but it causes a lot of chatter and heat the way I have it set up. Does someone have a better way to do this? Thanks, Pete

Surrey Pete............................

If you could just find a cutter like that, and you were interested ???????????? I would have you turn some brass down for me.

I asked a question a while back about turning down 6BR brass to PPC boltface and had no luck well I see there is someone who has a cutter.

Just wondering what one would cost to have one made? I may be interested in dishing out some cash. Wayne?????????????

I've been doing it for years. Wayne, is your tool upside down?
Any tool grinding shop can grind you one. Mine looks like Wayne's, but was cut on a wire EDM.

Yeh, I am looking at that case turned the wrong way, it is hard to tell.
You really need a tool grinder to grind a full form tool such as that if you are not adapt at hand grinding tools. The problem is you have to keep the corner of the grinding wheel sharp to establish that zero radius corner......jackie

Pete....change you tool heigth

Pete, if you are getting chatter, it may be that your tool is too low off centerline of the work piece (brass)...
How are you holding the brass case?..If the case is supported and rigid...chatter is usually caused by the cutting tool set incorrectly...
Try making some minor adjustments up/down...change the angle to ensure you have a slight positive angle at the tool point...tool much, or too little angle in the cutting tool can cause chatter...

Yeah, I think the pic is upside down. You can tell the one case has been turned down by the diameter tho. I used a 1/4" tool bit and made the shape on the mill with a carbide endmill. There is some relief to the tool but not much, I just set it below center enough to clear and it cuts fine.

I made one years ago for turning the rims down on the 30 American brass. If I remember correctly I finshed up the corner with a cutoff wheel on a Dremel tool, then ground the rest of the tool to align with that. It wasn't perfect but worked well enough.

If you have a collet attachment for your lathe get a brass collet blank and cut a chamber in it to hold the case.

I have a new Micro lathe

Admittedly, It isn't the world's best situation. Randy Perkowski sent me a few tool bits and one of them looks like a parting tool so that is what I used.

I tried holding the cases in a Wilson case holder for their trimmer but a combination of the chuck on the lathe being barely usable and all else, EVERYTHING has chatter marks on it !

I have been chucking the cases up now directly but that leaves chatter marks on the cases; hoping it doesn't harm them @ the web. I have limited shimming materials so I have not had what I needed. I found the rear sight off a 788 that I was able to use. I must find some sheet metal to cut up though and yes, I think the tool is too low.

My Gunsmith is sending me his tool to use so I'll see how that goes. There may be a market for these tools is someone would or could get a few made up. I will be the first on the list to buy one.
