PPC Boltface and Score - 30 Major

Bill is right. The N120 is just a tad slow for my 30PPC, (it takes a full case), but I bet it would shoot lights out in the case you are using, since it probably holds about 1.5 to 2grns more powder.
I do not wish to be argumentative, but velocity is really the result of bullet weight and velocity, the old "for every action, there is an opposite and equal reaction" thing.. With less powder, you might experience a little less muzzle blast.
I built the 30PPC to specifically shoot the 112 grn BIB or Cheeks bullet. You can get 2950 with great accuracy, and the recoil is less than a 30BR with 118's, especially in a 10.5 lb Rifle.
But, when I loaded up some 118 BIB's at the same velocity, (NOT recommended), it hit me just about like a 30BR.......jackie

Jackie, n120 was my powder of choice but now that I'm basically out of it and can't find any I began to play with different powders. I am getting equally as good accuracy but admittedly without quite the velocity with most that the n120 gives. TonyC's gun weighs in at a little under 10.5 lbs. With a load that I have chonoed in a 20-1/2" barrel @ 2850 in my gun(13.5lb), his gun with a 22" barrel I am guesstimating velocity to be at least 2900 with a
1 grain heavier bullet than my data reflects for the same powder load in my gun. Thats not much difference. I have shot mine with n120 and a 115 gr bullet at 3050 fps. Drop at 200 reflects very near equal ballistics compared with my 30 BR. Whether the recoil is only perceived as being less or is actually less is debatable. What's not , is the look on everybody's face thjat shoots it after shooting their 30BR. They all say it has a very noticebly lighter felt recoil. As you know, the same can be said of some of the new short mags out there. Ballistically equal with less felt recoil. You know what you are talking about and I am listening but it just feels less. I know about the every action = opposite reaction stuff. It is just very noticebly lighter. Can the case deign play a role in this?---Mike Ezell

Mike:
I think you missed the point of my post. I didn't say Jackie doesn't shoot a 30 cal. He does. However, so far I havn't heard of him shooting it in any of the Gulf Coast Regional Matchs. Nor, have I seen where any of the country's top shooters are using 30s at the SS or Nationals. I have, and occassionally shoot a 220 Russian and 22 short, but I don't shoot them in anything but club matchs. Heck, you can't even shoot a 22 in sporter, why try to hassel with two different cartridges in the same match.

As recently posted by many others, there is no advantage and serveral disadvantages to shooting a 30 cal in short range group. It is fine for hunter, and might be for VFS, but NBRSA doesn't have VFS. A thirty might be fun to play around with, but the rules, and the way group is shot, favor the 6ppc, or something real close to it.
Respectfully,
Bob

any chance of seeing a drawing of this cartridge ?

thanks

N-120 is a great powder for this case. In 30PPC and 7.62x39 test guns the N120 shot best and speed was very good.

Is n 120 still being produced and distributed in the US?

Q re the 30 major

I assume you neck up 6.5 grendell brass? Is sizing as simple as using a grendley fl with 30 cal bushings?? The seating die should be no problem...I've had an extra 30 cal barrel for quite some time. also have quite a few bullets made, even som of Randy's (Bib) 112's. that need to be shot. Since my pair of Bat DS have ppc bolt face I don't wish to open em up. Sounds fun..

Yes, you neck up the 6.5 case to 30 caliber. I did it in two steps, but I believe Mike has a one-step expander. Then neck turn etc. There are two headstamps of brass. Both made by Lapua. One is a little less expensive. But the brass quality looks very good.

Concerning the sizing die, I don't know exactly what modifications were made. The neck bushings are just like what you would use with the 30BR.

The name Grendel is covered by copywrite I've heard, So a .30 Grendel can't be unless Alaxander Arms I believe ok's it. Anyway Larry Feusse here in Michigan has been using the .30 GR for a while and doing quite well. He may have some input on it. I saw him using it in Harrison, I believe he did very good that day as well. In Harrison I am usually running the scores and stats in the shed and I don't get out to chat with the shooters as much.

N120

I just talked to Bruno's, and they have N120 coming in on the next order.
The problem is, they do not know when the next order will be filled. They are at the mercy of things they have no contole over.
But, it is still being produced........jackie
