Bill is right. The N120 is just a tad slow for my 30PPC, (it takes a full case), but I bet it would shoot lights out in the case you are using, since it probably holds about 1.5 to 2grns more powder.
I do not wish to be argumentative, but velocity is really the result of bullet weight and velocity, the old "for every action, there is an opposite and equal reaction" thing.. With less powder, you might experience a little less muzzle blast.
I built the 30PPC to specifically shoot the 112 grn BIB or Cheeks bullet. You can get 2950 with great accuracy, and the recoil is less than a 30BR with 118's, especially in a 10.5 lb Rifle.
But, when I loaded up some 118 BIB's at the same velocity, (NOT recommended), it hit me just about like a 30BR.......jackie
Jackie, n120 was my powder of choice but now that I'm basically out of it and can't find any I began to play with different powders. I am getting equally as good accuracy but admittedly without quite the velocity with most that the n120 gives. TonyC's gun weighs in at a little under 10.5 lbs. With a load that I have chonoed in a 20-1/2" barrel @ 2850 in my gun(13.5lb), his gun with a 22" barrel I am guesstimating velocity to be at least 2900 with a
1 grain heavier bullet than my data reflects for the same powder load in my gun. Thats not much difference. I have shot mine with n120 and a 115 gr bullet at 3050 fps. Drop at 200 reflects very near equal ballistics compared with my 30 BR. Whether the recoil is only perceived as being less or is actually less is debatable. What's not , is the look on everybody's face thjat shoots it after shooting their 30BR. They all say it has a very noticebly lighter felt recoil. As you know, the same can be said of some of the new short mags out there. Ballistically equal with less felt recoil. You know what you are talking about and I am listening but it just feels less. I know about the every action = opposite reaction stuff. It is just very noticebly lighter. Can the case deign play a role in this?---Mike Ezell
