PPC Boltface and Score - 30 Major

My PPC boltface pulls and ejects cases so well, I didn’t want to possibly mess it up by having it opened for the 30BR case. I had seen what Jackie, Danny, Bill, and others could make a 30BR do.

In the meantime I stumbled onto a thread where Mike Ezell wrote something about a 30 Major. Sent an email or two inquiring about it. After a couple of replies, I called Mike. I could hear the excitement in his voice about the cartridge. He assured me that if I didn’t like it, he would rechamber the barrel in a 30BR for free.

My wife and I drove from Knoxville to Nashville, then north just into Kentucky. While one would drive, the other watched for highway numbers. Finally, the “Gun Shop” sign.

Mike screwed on the new barrel. The BIB bullets I had brought were not what Mike had been testing in his rifle, but it didn’t take him but a minute or two to locate a starting seating depth using the miniature neck and leade chamber tool that came with the barrel.

Mike fired a couple of shots. Then a 3-shot group. I looked through the scope. One hole. I tried a couple that went together. Mike adjusted the scope. He put five into one 10 ring. The group measured .171, not quite as good as the 3-shot group.

I believe this cartridge has potential. Every person I’ve met can shoot my rifles better than me, but surely I’ll be able to hit the ten ring once or twice when the flags are still.

You sound like you're having fun. Being a 30 caliber fan, I just have to ask.... What's a 30Major?

Thanks
Shelley

Its a .30 Grendel.

Mine should be back from my smith next week.

30 Grendel

I'm aware of the Grendel. How much powder will it hold as compared to a 30BR?

Thanks again

He might want to keep it.:)

It's a great little round. Very forgiving and considerably less recoil than the 30BR. Haven't seen one yet that's not a shooter. I love to see the look on the faces of the 30br shooters when they fire the first rounds through it. It's always the same look of astonishment. I have yet to find a downside to it.

Mike tried Reloader 7 since I have plenty of it. He's having good results with N120 and even 4227, but I'm skeered of 4227! 4198 might work, too.

Good Report. No doubt, what you are seeing is that just about any high intensity chambering, (as in small capacity, high pressure), in 30 caliber will put bullets one on top another if the components are of the finest quality. Whether it be a 30BR, a 30PPC, or this case.
In your excitement, don't loose face of the basic fact that there are quite a few 30BR's that will stack onebullet atopanother, andon a very consistant basis.
But you make a very good point. For the shooter who has Rifles with PPC bolt faces, this opens the door for them to achieve the same performance as the 30BR without openning upthe bolt face and possibly compromising the Rifle's ability when chambered in PPC. Another option for serious shooters.
That was my idea when I started work with the 30PPC. Good Shooting......jackie

H4198 works fine. Tony, don't sell yourself short in your shooting ability. Go to the line confident and just watch the flags. Now, if I can just remember that myself. Get out and shoot that thing and give us some feedback. If you have any questions about the round, don't hesitate to call me.---Mike Ezell

N-120 is a great powder for this case. In 30PPC and 7.62x39 test guns the N120 shot best and speed was very good.

I believe that Benchrest shooters are the finest group of people in the World but we can be broken down into two groups, those that think the staus quo is the only way to go, and those that think if you find something that works, go with it. I fall into the latter group. If score shooters always shoot 30br's and group shooters always shoot 6ppc's, that's all we'll ever have. Not that that would be terribly bad. They're both great! The 30 Major is a great round and I just don't see a down side to it yet. It's another option yet. I don't have to buy another bolt and I don't have to rebate rims. I just neck em' up, turn necks, and shoot, with less recoil than my 30BR at the same velocities. These are some of the reasons it makes a good option IMO---Mike Ezell

If you don't mind me asking, what barrel are you using?

Mike

Yep...less recoil, same velocity. Likely a combination of doing more with less in terms of powder and efficiency and less shoulder than the BR.---Mike Ezell

RE: Status Quo: Don't try to fix what ain't broke. Based upon decades of shooting, expermenting, and consistently winning at group, nothing, but nothing, has been shown to beat the 6ppc, or improve on it in any meaningful way. Overall, for short range group it is unbeatable under the rules. As long as group rules don't change much the 6ppc will continue to dominate.

When Jackie, or the other top dogs, totally give up their 6ppc for a .30 cal something or other, I'll think there might be something to the 30 cal for short range group.

Shoot whatever you like. You obviously fall into the first category. I'm sure that you will be happy. As to the "Top Dogs", Jackie already has a 30PPC.
I have a huge amount of respect for him and others who have accomplished what they have but they are open minded to new things. Tuners for example. The 30 major shoots as well as anything that I have shot for group or score but regardless, it is a good option for someone that wants to shoot score with a ppc bolt face. To each their own. Respectfully---Mike Ezell

Bill is right. The N120 is just a tad slow for my 30PPC, (it takes a full case), but I bet it would shoot lights out in the case you are using, since it probably holds about 1.5 to 2grns more powder.
I do not wish to be argumentative, but velocity is really the result of bullet weight and velocity, the old "for every action, there is an opposite and equal reaction" thing.. With less powder, you might experience a little less muzzle blast.
I built the 30PPC to specifically shoot the 112 grn BIB or Cheeks bullet. You can get 2950 with great accuracy, and the recoil is less than a 30BR with 118's, especially in a 10.5 lb Rifle.
But, when I loaded up some 118 BIB's at the same velocity, (NOT recommended), it hit me just about like a 30BR.......jackie
