Powder sifts

I need to sift some powder...ran into a couple of kegs that are very dusty. Any help with size and/or place to buy would be helpful. It's for 8208.

Are you referring to IMR 8208? If the powder inside the kegs is dusty you may want to see if the powder has an acrid smell. You may have a bad batch of powder. Smokeless powder does not normally get "dusty!" Be careful!

Perhaps - - -

you can find what you need @ Wally World. Several years ago I inadvertently mixed a few pounds of different powders. I was able to find a "Strainer" @ Wal-Mart that would allow the small one fall through and the big ones stay in. It actually went pretty well and didn't cost mush. P

If you know somebody that works for the state highway department, they should have access to all the sieves you could ever want. All the way from 1.5" to 200 (openings per inch). Also, any geotechnical or soils testing lab will have them along with shaker tables. A grounding line is recommended so you don't set yourself on fire.

seives

Kevin,

I think Butch has what you need. I'll bet they are Dual Manufacturing brass seives. All the 8208 will pass through the #20, but it will catch the large foreign particles that often times end up in pulled down 8208. The 8208 will not pass through the #30 seive, but will allow the ball powder and dust that often times end up in pulled down 8208 to fall through. Its a lot of work, but if your patient you can get some very clean 8208 out of some batches that are less than ideal.

I bought my set from ASC Scientific. The sieves are about $50 each; the pan is about $20; and, the lid $15. By the time you pay shipping they will cost you more than $200.

I haven't screened any gun powder but years ago I worked in a lab that did a lot of screening of oil well fracturing sands. This was done with stacked graded screens on a shaker table. I think I would be a bit concerned about shaking gun powder. Might just wear some down to smaller sizes and just might wear off some retardent coatings. You might just end up with a powder a bit different from what you started with. Just my opinion of course.....Donald

Hmm

Ever took a good look at N133. In a 30 grn charge, I bet you could find multitudes of different sized individule granules.

I have always wondered what it would perform like if you separated the powder so that each charge had the same size granules.........jackie

Jackie,
With my 8208 you could get a little more velocity with the sifted powder. I'm talking about the smaller sifted granules. It makes sense as you can get more in the case.

Dirty 8208

Take Butch up on his offer to loan you his 3 numbered sieves. Last year I bought two 8 lb jugs of 8208 that were filthy. Broom straws, floor dirt, sand, and dust. Butch was kind enough to send me his sieves. I was amazed that with a minimal amount of work, I ended up with 16 lbs of clean 8208. No more scratches on my powder measure barrel, no more jams while trying to dispense that lot of 8208. Just reimburse Butch for the postage. Send the sieves back with a thank you note. Most importantly make sure to clean the sieves afterwards. I was so impressed by the results, that I later purchased the same size sieves from McMaster Carr, including a catch pan and a brass top. I have since loaned them to other shooters here in Phoenix area. A couple sets in the Bench Rest community loaned around should serve us all. Let me know if I can help Doc Marsh

I've shot about 100 lbs of this powder but at the bottom of the last jug there was at least a cup of fine powder (dust). No dirt, grit or anything like that that I could tell. Really unusual, what bit me here, I dumped it into my powder measure bottle at the Alabama shoot and had to shoot it because it's what I had. Sure could tell the difference cleaning. I opened a new jug last night and went to my range and shot two consecutive high ones at 200 with the bag gun in perfect conditions. Couldn't do that with the dirty powder. I'm gonna go through all my jugs just to make sure.

Appreciate the help Butch....class act.
