Norma 200 in the 30BR

I bought about 16 pounds of Norma 200 off Gene Bukys last year, I finally got around to trying it Sunday in my 30BR.

I just put enough of it in there, (it turned out to be 34.8 grns), to hit a tad over 3000 fps, and tuned from there. I was using the BIB 118, and got it to shooting nice round ".200 flats". The burn raye is just about identicleby weight to the lot # of 4198 I have been shooting.

We decided to shoot a 3 target match at the end of the day, and I nailed 13 X's out of 15, the two I missed were simply with the condition, which was pretty nasty.

We all have decided that 4198 is the cats meow in the 30BR, but Norma 200 does seem to shoot about as well. It cleaned up good, after about 25 straight rounds, about like 4198. I might even shoot this combo at the next Austin match in a couple of weeks.

Thats very interesting. Nice to know there is another alternative. I enjoy the 30br just about as much as the ppc stuff, so i will see if i cant buy a pound to try for myself. When i first started shooting the 30br last year i was using benchmark with awesome results. What i didnt know was that my velocity was way down. I dont even remember exactly what it was. I had mentioned this to a couple other 30br guys and they told me there is absolutely nothing other than 4198 to use in the 30br. I guess no one really thought about the norma offering, i know i sure didnt!! Thanks for the heads up! Lee

please don't tell ronnie long this, he's been whoopin ass for over a year with vitvh n-130 in a 30br,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Norma 200 has always been on my radar screen, but I had to use the over-the-horizon radar, if you know what I mean. Norma powdwers are great, availability not so great. Tubal 2000 is another good one, as well as N-130. Availabilty is the problem.
 
Benchmark will just get there in a 30BR. The load listed on 6mmbr.com at 36gr. is not even close though. To make 2950 fps with Benchmark takes 38.5gr. You can make 3000 fps with the new H322EX at 38.0gr. The old 2015 will also just barely make 2950 fps at 37gr. The Reloader powders will also work RE7 will make 2950 fps at 34.5 gr., and RE10X will make 3000 fps at 36.5gr. Obviously the RE7 is capable of well over 3000 fps if you take the load on up, but the other 4 powders I listed are to the point where you just can't hardly get any more powder in the case. All loads chronographed with the 118gr 9 ogive .925" jacket Cheek bullet. Just more powders for you guys to experiment with.

As soon as I get my new 30PPC shooting with 4198, I am going to compare it to V V 130. I used to shoot V V 130 in my 30BR and it shot great(plus I have a stock of V V 130).

Just got an email titled “cats out of the bag” with a link to this thread from one of the gents I shoot groundhog matches with. The author also came up with using Norma 200 in the 30BR after playing with Quick Load and experimentation late last season. Dave Berg’s good results so far this year with 34.5g & 118 BIBs have convinced a few of us to buy some of the powder. But for months my cans have just sat because my scores and the weather wouldn’t justify taking off the fast twist 22BR barrels. Now that we’re into summer with its frequent clam mornings and lots of mirage where the 30BR is supreme and I do land up putting on a 30BR barrel, I load H4198 anyway so’s to get a traditional feel for how accurate my new gain twist Bartlien barrel is. Thing is my 118g 10 ogive BIBs that are seated well into the lands aren’t moved by either a slightly compressed 34.5g of H4198 or by closing the bolt with just .0015-.002” neck tension (plan on trying even less) on the bullets. So I’m not sure what advantages if any I’d get with the Norma powder. Availability and price are 2 strikes against it. But if it’ll allow for stuffing in enough more powder to get another 100fps without losing any accuracy it’ll be worth the extra price. I won’t be freed up any non-match mornings to load test the stuff for at least 3 more weeks. Jackie, please keep us informed on your results.

Have you tried Viht N120? It's not as volitile as 4227 and it's faster than norma 200. I use it in my 30 Major and just love it in it. The cartridge is the same as a 30 ppc but .070" longer to the shoulder(Grendel brass). The 200 works well in it also. It's my second choice in most barrels. --Mike Ezell

Anyone tried V133 in the 30BR. Especially with the heavier bullets. Although the burn rate charts show it to be right in there with N200 and H4198, I would guess it might be a bit slow. However, some of us have been getting pretty good groups with the Sierra 135MK. But with 4198, about 2800+ is all you can get without getting into pressure problems. And they will stabilize in a 17 twist.

Donald, the primary function of the 30BR is in the Varmint for Score Arena. The slow twist, light bullet combo has proved to be very difficult to beat. Not only are they deadly accurate, the slow twist and light bullet weight make for ease in shooting.

Going with heavier bullets is probably going in the wrong direction.........jackie
