My centerfire friends

Here is a list of Mechanical Properties of Materials that will have just about any material that could be used: http://www.varmintal.com/material.txt

Good Hunting... from Varmint Al

Very Nice work Varmint Al. There is a lot of handy information there. I presume that you must have used some of that data in your FEA model. Very nice work, indeed.

More and more, the science of metallurgy and ceramics are being combined, with degree programs like "materials engineering", where there used to be metallurgical engineering and ceramic engineering. I think that there are some ceramic based materials which can be justifiably considered for mechanical applications these days. In particular, some of the composite materials can offer weight and stiffness advantages over many traditional metallic materials. (although I am a metallurgical engr. and prefer metallic materials and metallurgical bonds).

I have used 5 sets of the weight system to tune 4 rifles and one pistol. Of course this is rim-fire. And have another 3 sets coming. We can use calculations to measure whatever properties of this versus that, but the real test is getting to a range and test your calculations.

We have been working with 2 different solid muzzle designs with great success using Roger and Fred's weight design with 7 gram aluminum washers added to the equation to be placed anywhere using the weight system. It's even fun working the different combinations to get the least amount of weight on the muzzle attachment for the end result.

I know it works in rim-fire, and respect what you gentlemen in center-fire are doing.

Take Care,
Joe

I'm suppos'n...

My friend:
Within three years, there will be a sub-tenth agg fired at 100 yards...in centerfire benchrest, with a rifle assisted by a muzzle devce..........
Bill Calfee

I think this has already been done in 1972 by McMillen with a record .009 group. I guess you mean on a regular basis.

That .009 was for one group. I'd like to know what his agg was for that gun. Does anybody know?

10-years-ago some rifles without tuners were capable of sub teen aggs (on occasion in practice where it doesn’t count).
Back in about ’97 when they started having registered IBS group night shoots (out east at a range I cant remember the name of?), I remember thinking exactly that was going to happen and it was all over for day shooters because the IBS group records were going to plummet. But the records didn’t fall for some reason (wind?) and I’m not sure how many night matches they ended up having, or if they still have them today.

McMillan’s agg would be nice to know, but that’s kind of like asking how many buffalo’s buffalo Bill only wounded……
