Kalifornia Gunsmith

Fitch, congrats on getting out! :)

When I talk to fellow shooters in other states, like OR, WA, ID, PA, SD and AZ for example, it never fails to impress upon me that there ARE options to those who want a way of life that hasn't existed in California since 1989.

And like so many, I will take my earnings and talents and tax dollars and relocate out of Kalifornia, and not look back.

When I took the conceal carry class taught by John Ross in St. Louis, and then visited his shooting range where we all got to fire machine guns and big-bore revolvers, it dawns on one that "this is the way it ought to be".

Our property values in my part of the state are up only 3% this past year. I think overall the state of Texas is faring pretty well. Lot of Calif. folks moving in and taking advantage of low cost housing and no state income tax.

You short term Caleeefornians amaze me.My family has been here for 5 generations and amongst them there is no dispute.Anything south of Bakersfield should drop into the ocean.
The southern california lunatics are the voting majority that ruined this state. If you don't remember I'll clue you in.We had mountain lions killing joggers up here and you were watching charlie the cougar eating ham sandwiches from disney and voted to ban hunting them.
I live north of San Francisco and if they spit the state in half and included San Francisco with the south it surely wouldn't hurt anyones feelings up here.
We are hoping they will cut your water supply off which comes from the north in an effort to get more of you to move.
How are the 5 million illegals doing down there in the Los Angeles Unified School District? The schools didn't want to lose there government money if you remember so they made it a sanctuary city.
Southern California is a cancer on the entire state.
Lynn

Damn Lynn, how do you really feel??????/

Gentlemen,

California just could be the most beautiful state in the Union. The beaches, if that's your bag, especially in and around Monterey, are breath taking. The rolling, oak covered hills of the foothills are quite loverly. And the Sierra's? There might not be a prettier mountain range on the planet.

Unfortunately, this beautiful state of ours is largely populated by people with the average intelligence of a box of hair. We have something like the 7th largest economy in the world, yet we are continually in a state of financial crisis. Last I heard, they dem's in Sacramento are trying to raise our taxes again. With a Republican promise to block such a tax increase, the dem's are trying to use some archaic law as a loophole to call them "fees", instead of taxes. By doing so, they only need a simple majority to pass it. Illegal aliens are costing us a ton of money every year, and they'll probably be setting a bunch of convicted felons free from prison in the not so distant future...can't afford to house them. This place is a mess, and if you live here and think it's a great place to live, your disillusioned, or smoking crack. Maybe both.

If one had a giant jig saw, and could cut San Fran and LA (run Stephen!) out of the state and set them adrift in the Pacific, California would once again be the place to live. I wouldn't live any place else. Alas, Makita, Porter Cable, Bosch, etc., don't make such a saw, and I am stuck here until 12/23/18...the day I retire. Then my wife and I will take our retirements, investments, tax dollars, etc., and move the hell out of here. We'll celebrate Christmas 2018 some place else. Tis' a shame...

Ranting aside, before I started building my own guns, Jim Ketchum of Petaluma built me 3 live varmint guns and my "tactical" rifle. All shoot very well indeed. Very nice man to boot.

Justin

please don't do away with L.A. just yet. I finally found some really good Chinese food there after looking for 30 years.

Fitch

I live close to Billtown too. beautiful country.
the only thing that bothers me living in this area is if terrorists dirty nuke NYC the radioactive survivors will be upon this area in about 3.5 hrs flat. chuckling!! Fred

Butch,

My buddy bought a castle in Round Rock, just north of Austin. Absolutely beautiful house on a couple of acres. I think he paid $250 or so. $250 won't get you much in CA. He and the family love Texas and it's people. I may have to go out there and see what all the fuss is about. I do have some concern over the lack of public land (natty forest's) out there. Have you ever found that to be an issue?

Stephen,

Their not painting a bad picture of California shooters...their painting a bad picture, deservedly so, of the millions of croutons that we are surrounded by.

Ammashooter,

Now THAT'S funny! I feel you on that one. The only thing that has kept me from acting out on my thought is the lack of said jig saw, and the fact that Cupid's Hot Dogs would be part of the land mass that I cut away. They make great hot dogs...

Justin

Well,
We have public land for hunting, camping, fishing, and hiking. I believe the state just bought or had donated several hundred thousand acres that had a stipulation that it was to be available to the hunters. All of our hunting here is not privately owned and leased.

Butch,

Ahhhh...I see. I was under the (wrong) assumption that your state was with out places for one to wander off and go hunting, unless one had an in with a rancher. Somebody told me that it was all privately owned...no Natty Forests, wilderness area's, etc. Obviously, there are places to shoot (ranges) as the gun culture lives on in Texas. And God knows you have places to fish. I'd LOVE to spend some time on Falcon or Amistad.

The best part about Texas? Could be the "No Waiting" sign that hangs above death row!

Justin

I agree with Lynn! But were just here due to the wages and weather. Hard to argue with either! Once we retire we'll pulling up anchor as well. But the hunting is decent!

If you live and work and In California suck it up and get used to shipping your rifles out of state. True there are a few good smiths here but most BR gunsmiths are not. I've had no issues sending probably close to 20 rifles out of state to other smiths.

ML

Arizona has public land but no water on it.You'll most likely not find to many north american big game species on land without water.
Lynn

Don't tell that to all the Elk that I see dead on the 40 near Williams ever year, Or the Coue's deer we shoot every year down near Tucson.

True the water is lacking for the most part but AZ has great hunting. The upland hunted over Rex the GSP is unbelievable.
