Info on getting a good BR gun

I shoot IR 5050 RF unlimited matches and have good benchrest 22 rimfire guns. I am interested in a good air rifle for benchest matches, but know almost nothing about them. Please tell me who smiths them, brand or maker of actions, barrels and so forth. I have a gamo for plunking and want something much better. I understand that "scuba" guns are much better than spring guns, but that is about all I know. Can someone help with information or location of information.
Thanks
Jim Pollard

You can go to the AGBR site and check out the equipment lists on the match results. Right now Alan Zasadny seems to be the guy and Theoben's seem to be the gun if buying a brand new rifle.

I bought a Steyr 91 10m CO2 gun locally and am going to use it in the Match class. The gun seems to be very accurate and you get about 200 shots per fill [ which is 2 oz ].

I have shot an RN10 and an Annie 2002CA off my rest. The RN10 was awesome but the conditions were very bad the day I shot the Annie. I am looking at a Daystate CRX this weekend [ in my backyard which is the great thing about airguns !! ].

The CO2 and PCP guns are great in that you just load and shoot, no pumping. The downside is the initial expense of getting set up to recharge the things.

Jim,
Go back and look at some of the early post on this formum. You will see pictures of a lot of the rifles that folks are shooting.

Also, If you PM me, I'll tell you about a beautiful rifle a friend of mine has for sale.

Jim,
I was in the same boat as you shooting rimfire benchrest. I bought two Theobens one in .177 another in .22 both from AZ. If I had it to do over I would have bought one from David Slade and see how it shot from the factory. If it needed work, I would send it to 220 Swift and have him do his Magic on it. Gary Lemons did both of my BR stocks, they are SUPER and pieces of art!
Steve at PAG also makes winning guns.
Just my $.02

I dont know what you are looking to spend but sence you are into BR already, you have idea how $erious it can get. If I had a few grand invest into this hobby at a very serious level I would buy a Steyr rifle. In my opinion it is a far better platform for target shooting than high end hunting rifles alot of us are using. The smoothest, easiest to shoot rifle I have shot was a Steyr LG110. However If you want to break in on a reasonable budget I have other ideas that mostly involve modifying a chinese clone model. But ill spare you that unless you think its something you would consider.

Thanks to all that have responded. I get the feeling this is a lot like 22 rimfire BR guns. No one seem to agree on too much. This is like the RF game when asked to name the best action, barrel, tuner and trigger. Is the turbo better than a 40X, Hall, anschutz 54 or 52D action? There are at least 5 good RF gunsmiths, but who is the best--good question. If history is a good indicator, I learned that, go for good equipment to start with, that's where you will end up with time.
I have not done any research about where they shoot any benchrest airgun matches , and that will decide what I do.
Who are the best airgun smiths and how do you get to know their names and contact information?
My best two RF BR guns are both Turbos with Shilen barrels, and Jewell triggers, smithed by different gunsmiths.
I am simply trying to get as much information at this time that I can.
Thanks
Jim

Craig lets hear your thoughts on the Chinese clone...I am interested. At present I'm shooting a AA S200 from the bench and doing "just" ok...

Thanks/John

Information please
At the young age of 66, my steady hand is a thing of the past, good eyes are gone, a scope is a must, and solid benches and rests are needed. I have become addicted to 22 rimfire unlimited benchrest rest shooting. It is called an "old persons" game for a reason.
My queston---Are there any benchrest air gun matches in central Texas or anywhere?
Thanks
Jim

Right now AGBR is in it's infancy. The only way to make it grow is for individuals to put out the effort to put on matches in their area. I am trying to organize some matches here in the metro Atlanta area [ HEY RON, WHERE ARE MY TARGETS, RULE BOOK, 17 CAL PLUG, ETC ????? ]

Right now my current options are to have the airgun matches at the same time the rimfire matches are going on or later in the day after the RF match is over which would mean a start time of about noon for the airgun guys. Plan B would be to have the AG match on it's own day which is where we will hopefully eventually be if we can get 6 + participants. This range [ Gold City Rimfire Club ] is in Dahlonega which is a bit of a drive north of Atlanta.

Plan C is to find a suitable location closer to the metro area. Either indoor or outdoor. The problem is that you can't really afford to pay any rent for such a facility. It will have to be gratis, something like Mark's shop in Salem AL. IE, the owner of the land wants to compete or has friends that do.

Anyway my last words are HEY RON, WHERE IS MY MATCH DIRECTORS KIT ???:)

I The smoothest, easiest to shoot rifle I have shot was a Steyr LG110. However .

Just this week there was a used LG110 HP in 22 cal available and I really thought hard about buying it. I could tell it would be an ideal unlimited class companion to go along with my Steyr 91 match class rifle. Both have the same cocking lever set up and the familial design is obvious. The nearly $2K price tag made me have to think twice. If the gun had have been local I would have arranged to shoot it and probably would own it now.

GB, I think you are going to like shooting the airguns. The AG at 25 yds is very similar to RF at 50 yds as to the amount of hold off, etc. Last weekend after I had shot the Annie and the Daystate I put my Steyr on the rests and was very happy with the results. The wind was widely variable but eventually it would die right down and the thought in my brain would be "... if you can't shoot an X now...." Bingo, X .

Let me know when the first match will be and I'll do my best to make it even if I have to drive to Dahlonega . I prefer Saturdays . I met you at Airgunning Atlanta. kirby

David,
The next RF match at Gold City is Saturday, Nov. 8. We should just plan on having our first match on that date. Maybe Ron will let me on the calendar even though it's less than 30 days notice.

The rimfire guys are usually done by about noon. We could probably shoot at the same time or wait till they are done and not need ear protection. Which would you prefer ???

I need to be working on some target frames !!!

Ray

I just checked on the date with the boss , er my wife and she informed me that the 8th is taken . I'm obligated to attend a wedding . Maybe next month Sorry . But I would prefer to shoot after the rimfire guys finish . kirby

We could probably shoot on the 15th instead. Check that date. We could start about anytime we want , 11 or 12. One of the greatest things about AG is not needing ear protection.

I was able to get on the AGBR site and got answers to most of my questions. Thanks every one for the replies and advice.
I found that the closest airgun BR match was over 6 hours drive one way from my home so that is not practicable for me. I have 4 ranges that have unlimited 5050 matches within a 3 hour or less drive from my home.
I hope your program grows.
THANKS
Jim

Jim,
Talk to the guys at your local ranges. You might find that some of them would be interested in having AGBR matches at their range.
