Info on getting a good BR gun

As I stated at the start, I was seeking information. I shot in 30 unlimited 5050 matches last year and also shot in Joe Haller on-line matches on RFC. That is app. 2 cases of ammo for matches alone and a lot of time and effort. I am also match director at Llano for our 5050 matches. I shoot very good custom guns off a Pappas one piece rest.
I have a friend in east Texas having a Mac-1 gun built and will probably shoot it sometime within the next 6 months. I will not drive app. 6 hours one way to a match, too old and so forth.
I will watch the BR part of your game develop and may jump in some where down the road of time, I have no interest in 3P or silly wet shooting.

Sorry for the late reply, I have had alot going on this week at my house with a water main break. Haven't been doing my usual airgun stuff. About a bargin benchrest gun, I gotta come out and say that I'm not an expert. What I know for sure is that the most important aspect to accurate shooting is a good barrel. You want consistant power and a smooth light trigger. I tried to achieve this with my QB79 and end up with a bargin BR gun. Where I came up short was the trigger. I got it to the point of being pretty good but not the match quality one would want for BR. However a B50 could be worked out the same way, 30+ shots in a decent spread and the trigger should have alot more potential, being two stage. A new barrel for sure, L/W, Anschutz or one of Tims long HWs. No mater what benchrest gun you buy or build your gonna have to address the stock. You dont want a magazine why pay extra for a refined gun that has features that dont help win BR. I say start cheap and make it your own. Get the best barrel, tune the action and trigger to what works for ya, buy or make or modify a heavy stock and your ready shoot great scores for well under a grand.

Information please
At the young age of 66, my steady hand is a thing of the past, good eyes are gone, a scope is a must, and solid benches and rests are needed. I have become addicted to 22 rimfire unlimited benchrest rest shooting. It is called an "old persons" game for a reason.
My queston---Are there any benchrest air gun matches in central Texas or anywhere?
Thanks
Jim

Hey you old goat, long time! How are you and yours? All well I hope.

You may have to do what I did, and start your own AGBR sanctioned club.
If you build it, they will come.:) And it is the game of the future, now.

And I totally agree with rlovett (the usft from tim at mac1 airguns is the best)
Get the best and cry once! I have heard that Tim at Mac1 is fixin' to run another batch of the USFT, so get 'em while you can.

Glad to hear you're still playing the game, GB.

And you can always come on up to San Diego for our AirGun matches.;) GG

Br matches

Graybread,
I"m the match director of the Airgun matches at Texarkana, Tx. and am sending you an open invatation to attend any of our airgun matches or our
ARA matches (which will start in March 2008). As of right now our range is the only range in Texas that is holding Airgun Benchrest matches but maybe by next year there will be more ranges get on board.
I suspose in your earlier posts you are refering to our range as being 6 hours away and I can understand your not wanting to drive that far but if you drive over to shoot there is always shooters that will let you borrow a rifle to shoot.
I read that you have a friend from East Texas that is having a USFT air rifle built. That wouldn't be a crusty old gentleman from Gilmore, Tx. by the name of Frank Tirrell would it?
If you get the chance you can check us out at www.texarkanagunclub.org. I sent hte webmaster some photos of our first night match.
Anyway I wish you lots of 10 & X's.

hello you old F__t. I am already a match director for unlimited 5050 matches and one at a time is enough. I am doing fine and still enjoy shooting and beating a few folks from time to time. Load up your 22 rimfire and come show us Texas boys how to shoot in Llano Texas. Claybuster and I still shoot a lot and also in Joe's on-line thing on RFC.

yes I know Frank, and don't believe any thing he tells about me. I understand he shoots some ARA matches with you folks already and but likes the price of pellets better than good 22 rimfire ammo. Tell him I said hello, if you see him. I have unlimited 5050 matches at The Llano range and shoot with a couple of ARA shooters from Waco and Gatesville. if you ever get down this away come shoot with us.
Jim
