How to measure neck length?

I have fireformed some test cases and want to load up some new brass and play with the loads.

My question is:

Is there any other tool apart from a case gauge that will give numerical values as to the length of the neck from shoulder to mouth?

Will the oal of the case suffice (does the shoulder angle or length change when pushing the shoulder back or is it the cylindrical dimension that changes)?

I am using a Hornady headspace gauge with micrometer at the moment and only found sites saying to use a Wilson case gauge.

I have one but not happy with it for measuring headspace or neck length.

I'm not shure I under stand your question. Did or can your gunsmith make you a button out of a piece of barrel to measure head space? Good Luck Max

I am able to measure the headspace (rim to shoulder).

What I am not able to measure is from the mouth to shoulder without using a Wilson case gauge.

Are there any other tools that can measure for this?

Hi "down under",,,,I usually use dial calipers and put the blade in the neck shoulder junction and the open them till the other is at the case mouth,,,,,its usually within a cupla thou....this gives me an idea of how much neck is available for bullet seating to avoid donut issuses,,,,I think that is the answer to your inquiry,,,hope this helps....Roger
PS I try to stay aprox .035" away from that area with the shank or heel of the bullet (if the boat tail is past it doesnt matter because it doesnt touch) that is enuff because most donuts are aprox .020" that I hav encountered ,,,
