How about an ISOC

Whilst washing me breakfast dishes this morning the thought occured to me to hold an International Shoot of Champions, like the car racing comunity has. It could be held at the Super Shoot and perhaps garner some interest form the Media. It would be fun as well. Spectators could get to see shooters from every disciplin all compete at a format that none of them had ever competed at before.

Whadda Ya Think?

Not....so good idea.
The media would show a bunch of old guys playing with guns and havin' FUN.....the media and libs HATE people having fun...Schumer would introduce a bill outlawing old coots from havin' guns

I think it's a great idea.

It would be very beneficial to the shooting community to get some pro-media coverage.

Also, what sort of programs are there for the young people to get involved with benchrest?

Many of the youth hunting programs have been very successful.

How About This

At Tomball, the local Scout Troop serves as our Target and Clean Up Crew. We pay them for this service, quite well, I might add.

This year, I was approached by the Scout Leader and one of our Board of Directors to see if I was willing to hold an informal school the Friday Afternoon before our first Registered Match.

I said yes. They are going to pick 5 of the Senior Scouts, and I will take them through the entire proccess from loading, reading flags, handling the Rifle at the Bench, and finally, letting each Scout shoot a group.

It ain't much, but it's something.........jackie

Isoc

IROC: the premise is that everyone drives equally prepped and performing cars. Who can build say 12 equal rifles? Or better yet, who would?

Jackie,

They are lucky youngsters to be able to get some personal coaching from you. I'm sure there are a lot of readers here that wish they were in that scout troop. It is an experience they will remember all their lives. Regardless of if they ever shoot benchrest or not, they will always have an appreciation and regard for it.

Are a tough deal. Much has been said about getting young people into BR shooting but it seems to be a tough thing to do. I observed a man with his two very young sons last Sunday teaching them all about Benchrest. I heard him tell them that he wasn't concerned about Winning that day because there was much to learn and it was learned best there in a match. This was the first time I had seen the process done in that manor. I have seen quite a few kids at the matches but all were "Going For It" as I recall.

I know that lots of folks spend big bucks for Position rifles for their kids and drive them all over to compete as well as to practice. I use to buy Lapua ammo from a guy down State who coached some of them at a local high school ( with Air Rifles). I haven't seem many parents do the same with their Kids at Benchrest with the exception of one of the guys who runs shoots here in Maine. He has been bringing his daughter with him to shoot for several years. She seems to enjoy it and is a very good shooter.

Many point to expense as that reason the UTH of America aren't shooting Benchrest but I would wager that two Anschutz rifles with all the gear necessary to shoot them might be a bit spendy. We are missing it somewhere else.

I once saw

A show on Dish Network in which there were Factory teams competing against each other with identical rifles for each team member. In other words, Ruger had a team as did Remington, etc, etc. I believe in IROC, the various companies had or have their turn at providing the cars. I wouldn't suggest that the Consumer gun makers be the ones to furnish the 13 or whatever rifles but on second thought, that might not be a bad idea. Any one of the Action makers could provide the actions and one Smith put all of them together; perhaps a lotery for that piece. There are lots of ways to go at it but I think we would need to think outside the box to make it interesting.

Jackie is doing exactly what works best. TV is for exposure and helps some that are looking become more aware but nothing brings more people into shooting than getting a gun in their hands and being taught how to shoot and the safety involved. I'm in the process of building a range on my property that will meet the minimum requirements for NBRSA and IBS for registered matches. What I am also doing is talking to the conservation officers that put on the hunter education and kids shooting classes to bring them to the range (right now they just shoot in a sand pit. And I have been in touch with CMP to get set up for 22lr guns for kids to be taught with and compete. Local gun dealers are willing to supply the ammo and I'll be happy to buy up to 10 guns for teaching and comp. We all need to do what we can at this crucial point in history, to educate the people (young and old alike) of the positive side of firearms.

Sometimes, I get side tracked and wonder if it's worth the effort. But Jackie's enthusiasim always brings a new burst of energy to me.
