Hey Wilbur

Do all those new search options come with new software or are you trying to put luddites like me off our strokes? :D

OK John - where do I click to find these "new" search options? I've been off my stroke for a while now.

Damn, they've vanished! I'm a bit hazy, but there were three, maybe four search possibilities. One listed individual postings starting with the latest - not threads, it was to the right of the New Posts button, to the extreme left was one the function of which escapes my fleeting memory & I vaguely recall there was a fourth.

Maybe I crashed into some admin routine.

No, the bugger came back after I posted:

That's the bugger, but it's appearing after I do a New Posts search, I think, or is it after I post to a thread.

I started this response, then decided to check back to see what was displayed at the head of the New Posts list that I've been working on & it was that screen's option bar.

Wilbur why cant we search for 3 letter words.
There have been a lot of times I wanted to search for something but it was a 3 letter word and well you know the rest.

Three letter words typically turn up too many results and that's a big load on the server. Comes highly recommended not to do it but because you asked I can try if for a few days to see if it kills the server. One thing up front - I ain't going to two letters!

Also, if you find the searches unusable please holler so I can change it back. Gimme a bit and I'll have it changed...gotta sort thru a jillion settings.

How do you do an "and" search? A lot of searches aren't terribly useful because they're "or" searches. If I want "rimfire barrels", the blasted thing now give all posts with either the word "barrel" or the word "rimfire" -- you can imagine how many that is!

Thanks Wilbur.
Let us know if it bothers anything.

Actually, with further research, I don't think changing the setting I changed will have any effect. I'll need to change something else in the server software before it will allow a 3 character search - or find anything. Have you tried it? Find anything?

Big can of worms this search thing is - had no idea after all these years.

Here's what I know so far - If you are using FireFox you search for rimfire+barrel. If you are using MS Internet Explorer you use the same search term but it may or may not work correctly. Don't know yet why the difference but I'm looking.

Later added:
OK, scratch that - you gotta set the "Sort Results By" deal to "Relevance". You'll still get the same set of results but the posts/threads that have the phrase "rimfire barrels" will be first.

Wilbur I tried it and your right it does not search for 3 letter words yet.
Thanks for trying though.

Usually, if you put a phrase in quotes, both terms must be present to get a hit. See:

http://dl.acm.org/documentation/Types.htm

Problem with our search within BR Central is that's not true. If you search for "rimfire barrel", you get any post with EITHER the word rimfire or barrel. In terms of Boolean algebra, this is an OR -- just one of the terms must be true. An AND is where both must be true.

Same result if you use + BTW.

We need AND searchs!

I had a bunch of research ready to post - clip by clip. Turns out, none of it would work here or on any Vbulletin based forum I found. If anyone finds a Vbulletin forum where boolean searches work better than here please holler and I'll contact them to see what they did. There's a third party deal called "Sphinx" that gets good reviews but I think it will goof up the other sites on the server that use databases.

In the meantime, use quotes, AND, OR, NOR and set your "Sort By" to Relevance. That's the best I know for the moment.
