Favorite Songs....

Over the years I've acquired many favorites ... from a variety of genres, but of late, I can't get over how this voice remained hidden from the world for so long, only to emerge when the world seemed in need of hope, and something special and inspirational: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8OcQ9A-5noM&feature=related What a huge surprise this was to millions worldwide.

so far nobody has endorsed any gangnam style stuff......

hmmm

Thanks for that Procol Harum link Al,

The recent passing of a boyhood pal of mine got me thinking about lost possibilities and unfulfilled promise. We hung out together in our 'Leave It To Beaver' neighborhood, played basketball together in grade school and junior high, built model cars, ate countless lunches at each others house, got enthralled with fast cars, drag racing and fantasized in our pre-teen minds about ruling the world with a Top Fuel dragster that we would build ourselves....reality and things like money and jobs hadn't quite set in yet. Somewhere in his early 20's, having fun turned into serious drug binging for him. The rest of the story is a familiar one, ending much as you'd expect.

Lots of talent and a life that might have turned out differently. This one is for you, A.K.:

'The Needle and The Damage Done' Neil Young

Led Zeppelin was recently honored at the Kennedy Center. Closing out the show was Heart, singing Zep's timeless 'Stairway To Heaven'. The drummer is late Zep drummer Jon Bonham's son, Jason. John Paul Jones is loving it, Jimmie Page looks like he wishes he was on stage playing and Robert Plant gets glassy eyed and wipes a tear away at one point.

Ann has the pipes to pull it off and Nancy has the licks. Unreal......

Best live concert recording, guaranteed to get my spirits going: Sing Sing Sing, grand finale, 13 minutes of stompin' swing music Benny Goodman's 1938 Carnegie Hall concert!

I love Australian pub rock from the early '70's and into the mid '80's. The most famous would be AC/DC but we had many others including Rose Tattoo, the Angels and Cold Chisel who I consider to be better than AC/DC, but they never cracked the American market. Cold chisel had a powerhouse front man in Jimmy Barnes and he used to drink a bottle of Vodka a night neat and often fought the crowd, while still managing to belt out a tune. I'd love to have been 20 back then, every night in a pub somewhere in Melbourne you would have had a decent band on.

If you like "raw" rock have a look on youtube at some of these.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7GL_0hGBEbI - "Goodbye Astrid"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BCM3siN_-qM - "Merry go round"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oQ19NWzA8TA - "Wild thing" An awesome cover of the Troggs song

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y2by810nulE - "Bow River"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=inKlN0ScObA - "Khe Sanh" Probably their biggest hit, and close to Australia's 2nd national anthem and has a special place to those who served in Viet Nam.

I know it's a topic about a favourite song, but I just couldn't pick 1, I hope those who listen enjoy a bit of what Australia was like back in the late '70's and early '80's.

Speaking of Vietnam....

This was, at one time or another, a fav of mine. A coupla shots of red whiskey and I believe I can do it better than anybody. Cold sober I can only supply a link....

Yeah, I know....but it fits with my favorite of all time famous quotes:

"eeny meeny jelly beeny" - Bullwinkle Moose.

Folks just can't seem to grasp the gravity of that....as I have

wow.. looking through the past few pages I didn't see a single song from this millenium...

that makes one think if there is anyone posting that's born after 1930...

here is one song that's actually popular today :)

neither am I, but I still listen to new music even though I like the old stuff to.

And Im old enough to be Miley's dad, still I think she makes quite good music, at least in the past 2 years.. not very fond of the Hanna Montana era...

OK..... ain't nuttin' wrong with new music BUT........ here's a rich little girl blessed with good genes, a music-filled upbringing and all the opportunity life can offer and her response is pure trailer trash. She's got a gorgeous voice, the best training in the world and yet she's intent on "making herself" instead of happily riding her wave of fame. In trying to be Madonna she comes across as a spoiled little-girl slut. Madonna crawled, clawed and groped out of the gutter on guts, grit and commitment, she did what it took, Rock And Roll Baybieeee...... not exactly Miley's life story.

Out here in the hinterlands of The Americas we LIKED little Hannah Montana, we LIKE family values and long term commitment..... we're the result of years of civilized living, we understand the difference between ourselves and base creatures. Sexuality is to be enjoyed, not exploited because we're not animals. We're adults, or at least we aspire to be someday, the hicktown bourgeoisie she hails from just doesn't GET Madonna let alone Lady Gaga or Amy Winehouse, we are NOT eurotrash.....nor do we want to be,

nor is she....

she's not edgy, she's not angsty, she's just a little redneck girl crying for attention.

Watching her video is painful, Jamie Foxx had to apologize publicly a few yrs ago for saying she'd end up on a stripper pole, he's been vindicated.

Sorry to disagree dansig, I'm also old enough to be her dad, but I AM a dad and it hurts me to watch.

just my opinion :)
