Expense?

I started back up in RF last year and shot two record shoots per month all winter this winter when the CF folks were having their "Winter Series'". I have found a fairly large learning curve with the Rimfire. There is no forgive anywhere in Rimfire shooting. I figure the holds are at least twice that of Centerfire.

Some of the things I like about it are the reduced noise level and NO recoil. I also like being able to shoot a lot more record shots in a day. Even a 3 card Unlimited match gives one 75 record shots and it's all done in a couple of hours, not that I'm ever in a hurry at matches. I am too old now to be in a hurry to do anything. There isn't much, if any reduction in cost, from what I have experienced so far. Travel now is the real Killer.

Thanks for all the info guys.
Now I am going to give it some serious thought.
Money wise it will probably be next year before I can get it all together. I am going to have to find out what all is necessary.
I know some things can be used in both cf and rf but I have no idea what additional things I will need.
Fred I am glad to hear you are doing some better.
Dan sent. And its worth considering.

Sorry about that oid song but...

I am looking at my ammo stash. Where has all my ammo gone. Soon it will be time to start testing again. The pure volume of shooting separates Rimfire from Centerfire.

The ammo hunt is not always any fun but playing chase with a worthy buddy is.

Hi Vern,

Couple of options to think about Boerne shooting club host 2 ARA BR. matches per month. Dan Killough, KSS, place is located in Winters TX. and he has a nice place to test ammo lots when he gets a order in, yes some lots shoot better than others and it helps not having to just order some and be stuck with it. There's other options for shooting ARA in TX. Waco, Ennis and KSS besides Boerne. There's IR 50/50 unlimited matches San Angelo and Gatesville. There's also some rimfire events over towards Houston, but not sure what org. it is.

Thanks for the info. I will tell my son, who still lives in SA. I used to work for CPS (38yrs) Spruce and Braunig Plants. I have been a shooter for many years and have just got into true .22 rimfire accuracy shooting. Enjoy this forum, I'm living proof that your never too old to learn. Tom

Vern, I am using all the same equipment for Rimfire that I use for Centerfire. The cost of having a Rimfire barrel installed is somewhat more pricey than Centrfire barrels but other than that, there is very little difference in the cost of equipment. The one thing to plan on is when you find a lot of ammo your rifle shoots well, buy all of it you can afford or better stated, if there is 2 cases of it available, buy them both right then. There is a process for finding good ammo. I sometimes hear folks say their rfles are not ammo sensative. I don't know if they mean they have more then one lot of ammo that shoot well in their rifle or their rifle will shoot anything they feed it but I have yet to own a RF rifle that shoots everything well. The oposite has been true from my experience. It is well worth the trip to drive to a location where one can test a number of lot numbers of ammo, well wotrh it.

I have a 2013 with a Lilja 'drop in' [ drops in, yes. Shoots well only after working on the chamber for an hour on the lathe ]. I bought some left over mixed up test lots of Eley Black box and Tennex and it is simple to find a tuner setting that will shoot quite well with any of the lots. This bbl is insensitive to loading machine or speed. On the other hand my Hall and every other bbl I've chambered want's 1 machine and a pretty narrow range of speeds.
