Let it be known that all companies that refer their software/hardware technical support to 3rd world nations who speak english as a hobby are FINKS!

That is all.

Welcome to the push of the ACCOUNTANT! Economics.....low prices..maximize profit...maximize shareholder value....(at what expense)...out the door with pride, premium product......etc..etc..

Hopefully the pendulum will swing the other way....or at least some moderation to the insanity - profit drive... yearend bonuses....

Hopefully you have other options.....

Yea, Chad, we could have a long (but worthless) conversation about that subject. Anyone tried to resolve a problem with their Dell computer lately?

Um-hmmm, I think I ended up spending about 16 total hours on the phone with some surprisingly fluent Phillipinos to get the two problems fixed on my "Warrantee Repair". Plus, I did some fairly major surgery on my laptop under their phone direction to replace the hard drive, then a memory board. I think my time is worth more than this, so next time I will only buy from a vendor that has either true on-site service or mail-in service. I am not interested in becoming a do-it-yourself computer service tech.

One would think (dare assume) that when you have a window's based operating system and you purchase software from Microsoft it would install and run appropriately.

What was I thinking?

Beware:

If you run XP 2000 and have a corporate edition office package it may freeze up when you attempt to install SP3. The only solution is to pony up and buy the newer office 2007.

But it gets better.

That's not enough either. You'll have to create a new user for the stuff to work again.

Experience is never cheap. . .

cheers,

C

It could be worse Chad, you could be running Vista.

Do you have a drive image with the Windows XP install or do you have the standard Windows XP install CD. The reason I ask is if you have the CD maybe if you slipstream SP3 with Windows XP and do a repair install it will fix things or maybe not.

Joe,
After buying and leasing several Dell products, no more. All of my leases had a 1 month buyout. The last laptop that I leased was supposed to be that way. I trusted the sales person over the phone. I did not read the small print. When the lease was up they asked for a $1000 buyout. I did get a little upset and asked for them to send a box so I could send it back. It took 3 months to get it back and they wanted $936 in lease and other fees. It took an attorney to straighten it out. Needless to say after 8 Dell purchases there will be no more.

My brothers place of work sold me two Dell latptops for $50 CDN total cost .
This will work fine for running PressureTrace etc.
I have the Dell cd's for the computer department also.

If you buy computer stuff in Canada try Memory Express.
If you have any problems just return it for warranty repair usually at no cost.
For a small fee you can have their extended warranty.
This year they replaced both my burners and gave me a new Samsung monitor to replace the three year old one which died.

the Apple computers the more I think, Why haven't I done this?

Cost and compatibility with common applications...to answer your question.

Both are improving as apple regains a market share.

They are indeed a superior product to Microsoft

We have a Mac in the house and a HP in the shop. They have both been running for a little over a year. No problems at all with the Mac, countless freeze ups with the PC where the solution has been to turn the power off and turn it back on and reboot. My oldest son is home for the holidays and is in the process of changing the operating system on the PC from Vista to Windows 7. I figure when he's done, that I'll probably be buying new software. Hopefully not, but that's the way it seems to go when you switch operating systems.

I have a HP P4 2G single core running XP Home SP3. It works well, and gives me few problems. I also have a Dell laptop that has a slightly faster processor that runs XP Pro SP3. They both seem to work fine. I bought the laptop from a friend (who it turns out was having intermittent problems with it turning off due to heating problems) for $100, and when its infrequent problem got worse I found a complete set of directions (for my exact model, with pictures) on the internet, showing how to take it apart and clean the cooling system. It now works perfectly. I am not a hurry to change operating systems or computers. Some time ago, I came to the conclusion that it can pay to stay a couple of steps back from the latest operating system, and every time I get the urge to "upgrade" I remind myself that what I have does everything that I use it for well, although I plan to make one change. I am through getting ripped off by HP for printer ink. Next time I am trying having my cartridges refilled.

NOT cumputer related..........

...since this IS a shooting forum my rant concerns action builders. I contacted 3 different action builders and 2 of the three had neither the time or courtesy to even contact me? Business must be good?

If you think it's bad calling customer service for a computer or other product from the USA, Canada, Oz, or anyplace else where English is the language, and get a 3d world wizard who speaks English as a hobby don't feel bad. I worked for our (formerly) Rich Uncle, and towards the end of my career a call to my agency's HQ in DC frequently got someone who may or may not have been a US citizen. They spoke English with an accent that was nearly impossible to understand and/or interpret into anything I understood.

THAT is REALLY aggravating.

How does the

non technical type even keep their PC running is beyond me. My background has been in the systems/technical field for more than 30 years and a lot of PC experience, but now really don't get the warm and fuzzies messing with such anymore. But back to the point seems like I'm having to hack/fix something on either mine or the wife's every few months. Calling tech support, good luck with that, I do research on the net and luckily generally find a fix. I've had to do complete reloads a couple of times just due to the fact that I'd given up trying to fix some strange software bug. One piece of advise that I can give is just load and run the minimum amount of stuff on your PC to do what you want with it. If your the type who loads every freeware etc.... out there good luck with keeping it going.

I have no idea why, but software I have had from Australia has not been this kind of problem, maybe they have that kind of problem at home and don't want to piss off there customers? So far so good from the land of Oz when it comes to tech support. At least with CNC software.

Many of the Computer companes are Anti Gun..

You should do your homework and not support the anti gun companies.
