Custom Barrel Questions

Hello Everyone,

I am a newbie to this site, and I am sure glad that I found it. Unbelievable amount of great info. here. I was hoping some of you could help me with questions about installing a custom barrel on Rem. 700 action for 7mm rem. mag. This what I was thinking about installing.

1. Pac-Nor super match SS barrel.

2. 26" barrel sporter #4 contour

3. 5 groove

4. 1 in 9 twist (max. bullet will 160 gr. Nosler Part.)

Do you think this is the best possible recipe for accuracy and barrel life?

How many rounds do you think I could expect out of this? Mainly used for hunting in mild weather conditions. No rapid fire.

Thank you in advance for your input.

For years, the 7mm Rem Mag has been one of the top selling chamberings, possibly just behind the 30-06 as the all time favorite medium game cartridge.

But, as you might know, it is now an obsolete relic because the two major firearms manufactures decided that "belts are out" and "short and fat is better". Good marketing makes for better ballistics:D

You did mention one criteria, barrel life, that would make me consider the other '7mm', that being the 280 Remington. All things being equal, you will give up about 150 fps. You did not say what you will be hunting. Elk at 500 yards over mountain revines, or Mule Deer at 200?

You twist is correct, and PacNor certainly makes a fine barrel. Good Luck.......jackie

Jarrod,
I agree with almost everything that Jackie has to to say with the exception that I would look at the 280 Ackley, same brass as the 280 and all you have to do to get brass is to go down to yor gunshop and buy all of the 280 ammo you want and fire it in the Ackley chamber and you have the brass.
Also I hear that Lapua is going to import some 280 Ackley brass.

I will second the .280

I have one currently and just sold a 700 DM that shoots very well. That said, I personally prefer the .284 Winchester in the 7 MM lot. I have had two or three of those and love them. Winchester brass is readily avaiable and holds up well, I use it in a short 30-284 and it is super. I have had a 7 MM STW but I couldn't afford the powder to feed it :). I never found that I needed the boom when compaired to the .280.

I once read an article on Jarrett rifles and Mr. Jarrett was quoted as saying his favorite at that time was the .284 Win but brass was hard to get at the time. All said and done, one doesn't need big boomers to be successful. Just read the book "Shooter" and you can see that magnums aren't necessary.

Thanks for all of the input! I already have the 7mm rem mag. action -.532 case head. I believe the other 7mm cartridges listed are .473? This will primarily be a longe range elk and deer rifle. Is it realistic to expect 1,200 + rounds out of this setup? I will be loading to get 3,000 fps.

the WSM rounds all have your mag. bolt face. plus bushing the bolt face or just getting a new bolt isnt that big of a deal. now if it were me i would go with the .284 Shehane it's got the best of everything.
