Cleaning Rod - Straightness

crb,
You are sold on what you use and that is fine. Try this, after you think your barrel is clean, run a clean patch just to the crown. Don't let it go all the way out. Pull it back through and you will see what the rod left. A heat treated-polished rod will not hold the deposits from cleaning and are stiffer than the coated ones. I got tired of replacing my coated rods as the coating does not last forever. It is cheaper buying the rods by Denny Phillips and not worrying about having to buy more,Oh by the way the handles and bearings are much better also.

For what it's worth: I had a carbon fiber rod that worked well for 2 years, then it came apart as described in an earlier post--the one I bought to replace it came apart after a dozen or so uses.

I now use nothing but Dewey coated rods and have had no problems with them.

Another concept

I have a SS .22 rod I have been using when I run copper removal stuff into my barrels. As I was cleaning one of my rifles earlier this evening the thought came to me, why not use under-sized rods? That way they will never touch the barrel. I have never had an issue with using that small rod on my rifles. If they are hardned well, they shouldn't bend much. Wadda ya think?

I've found Pro-Shot and Neil Jones steel cleaning rods to be straight. I never had a problem with either and have used them for many years. They have won my trust !
