Awards For Club Match.. Need Opinion on These Two.

Aj

Nothing is written in stone.

Up untill a few years ago, it was deemed "too much of a hassle" for many to weigh each individule charge. But, in recent years, several new products in the way of small, reasonably accurate scales, and automatic powder measurers such as the RCBS Charge Master, have made the task much more user friendly at the range.

This years Nationals was a real eye opener for me. All you had to do was look around and see the numbers of shooters who were weighing charges, (and shooting well), to understand that either you evolve, or get left behind.

As for 133, I am still shooting it, but I do have 96 pounds of this new stuff on back order at Brunos. It might prove to be better, the same, or not as good. The only way we will really know is to get it, shoot it, and see. Let's face it, up untill now, unless you were one of the priveleged few who could get the "unobtanians", 133 was what you used.

I never had anything against Club Matches, I just always said that shooting group in club matches was a waste of time. Sorry, but I have seen to many "phenominol" aggs shot in Club Matches by shooters who do not bother to show up for registered events when that "pesky moving backer" is recording the shot count. OK, call me cynical. At Tomball we shoot Score at our Club Matches.

I also recognize the fact that the Sanctioning Bodies are steadilly loosing members. I have the priveledge to be a member of a club that is willing to allow us to hold Club Matches in order to support extreme accuracy shooting. Somebody has to bewilling to run these matches. At this time, it just happens to be me at Tomball. In years past, it was someone else. In the future, someone else will pick up the gaunlet. But, while I am doing it, we will try to make it as convienient as we can for shooters to come out and enjoy shooting in a Benchrest enviroment, but with a more relaxed atmosphere. We will try to reward their accomplishments with something that can instill pride in each individule, and we can only hope that these shooters would be willing to step up to the next level and be part of one of the two Sanctioning Bodies.

If they choose not to, then they can still have a great time doing what it is they like to do. Shooting.

I hope this explains why my attitudes have evolved a little. As the old saying goes, if you just stand in one place, you will never get anywhere, and just might get run over........jackie

We shoot both Group and Score for club matches. Wouldn't take long to recognize someone who was shooting teen aggs but couldn't shoot a 250.

Yep, I can agree with that!!!

Priceless

Driving your F250 diesel getting 13.5 mpg's from Dallas To Tomball to shoot in a club match $125

Waiting 3 months to get your powder, primers and your custom 30 cal bullets $1000 (if you’re lucky)

Shooting clean at Tomball to get a coffee mug or a hat pin from Jackie..... PRICELESS!!!!!! (and I'll do it 4 times a year)

Drivin

When I lived in the Houston area, it was about 26 miles to the Tomball range.
Now that I have moved, it is about 300 miles. I still intend to get some of those pins. Of course the drive might be the easy part.

Joe

ps. the snow flurries did not last long here.

vfs rifle

Jackie I have a question about the factory class at tomball. Can I shoot my ruger 77v If it was chambered in 6ppc? The gun is a factory rifle with no changes made but it is a bit of a odd cal.

Dotson

Refresh my memory, The old 77 Varmint has a magazine, and a forearm that is less than 3 inches. If so, then yes, it is legal in Factory Class.......jackie

Yes it is just like any other 77 v just chanbered in 6ppc. They only made it one year I think. This raises the mass production question. They also chambered the ruger no 1 in 6ppc that year, not legal I guess because single shot no mag? I think there was a law suit over the ppc trademark or something so ruger just stopped production after the one year. Anyway if I can get it to shoot good I may give it a try. Now there are no 3 inch forearms allowed, but can someone use the benchrest adapter like you get from sinclair and attach to a factory forearm? I am thinking not but just wanted to know for sure thanks Buddy

Classes

An unmodified Ruger #1 can shoot in Factory Class.

Dedicated Factory Target Rifles such as the Rem 40x, Savage F and F/TR will shoot in Modified Class..........jackie

Jackie, getting back to AWARDS:

I have has some experience with match awards. Over the past 50 years I've tried a lot of ideas: Blackinton medals, trophies, plaques, coffee cups, pins, even Blanket Shoot prizes like the Blackpowder boys.

Ten years ago we decided to cut back on expensive awards so we could reduce the cost of entry fees. Our match attendance went up.

We now give out 2 1/4 inch badges, custom designed for each match. Here is a example that you might consider. The cost is much lower than trophies, medals, plaques, metal pins or coffee cups. How 'bout 90 cents each.

Here is an example you might consider for your club: When your great-grandchildren find one of these in the attic, they will know more about it and you, than if they found a coffee cup or a little pin.
