What are you guys using to glue in your actions with ???

JB weld if you dont want to rough up the underside of the action

or

Marine Tex gray but requires roughing up the action to stick

release compound

what should i use for a release compound on the bedding before i glue..
I herd shoe polish?? and what should i use to clean the bedding and action before glueing.
Sorry for all the questions, don't want to screw this one up.

For a release agent, I have always used KIWI Neutral shoe wax. A thin film is all it takes.

Others use carnuba auto wax, probably any similiar product will work.

I also use JB Weld..........jackie

Brownells Spray Release

Really allot of wax products work as releases. Candle wax for the recesses.
JB and Devcon are 2 for longer term glue-in. Marine Tex for short term. I use JB.

:confused::confused::confused:

Are you gluing the action in the stock? You don't want to use release agent if you are.

If you mean release agent on the action while you are bedding, I use the Brownells release agent. It is water based so it leaves no wax or grease to contaminate the glue job. Simply scrub it out with hot water.

I use Brownells Acraglas for the adhesive.

Thanks guys

1 more question... I herd about (a) or what sounds like a great idea....
If i take a screw, run it up into the front screw hole in my action, cut it off only to leave about 3/8 of an inch sticking out into the bedding and JB. It should act like a small recoil lug.

Are any of you guys doing this or herd of it ??

screw for recoil lug

I have seen allenhead screws screwed into the middle of the action (single shot) used as recoil lugs. Trueflight makes a vblock that uses this setup with the screw going into a hardedned steel insert in the vblock( I have one). Before these were made I saw them screwheads bedded in as recoil lugs using devcon and marine tex. These were on palma rifles.

No! no-no-NO!!!!!

You want to be able to get this hawg apart some day!

What if it shoots loose but'cept for the stupid screw????

Chuck that screw idea'r into the "somebody thoughta hadda a bright idea but have never bin done it" bin and move forward.......

Here's what I do with glue-ins. Dunno if it's RIGHT but I do it.

First bed the action, I use wax as release. I check the bedding job by flexing the screws.

Now , while the action is soaking in MEK, I thoroughly SCRAPE every surface of the bedding using inletting tools.

I like to heat the action....... boiling it is a real good method but a pita.......

Get everything masked and prep'd, I mean EVERYTHING ready and stuff set out like an operating table.

Now I mix JB Weld, let it set under an incandescent bulb until it gets really runny....... now ya got's about 1 minute to GET 'ER DONE!

Lash 'er up lightly with surgical tubing, let it cure for a day at room temp and shoot until you want to take 'er apart again. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE SOME SORT OF INDEXING SYSTEM IN PLACE!!!! Without a recoil lug you still need SOMETHING for alignment or you gonna' end up feeling like you're tying a weiner to an ice cube using nightcrawlers for strapping............a sinking pit'full feeling indeedy.......IMO this is why "glued and screwed" has such a loyal following. ;)

hopefully this will get the ball rolling with some realio-trulio gunsmiths ;)

It's what Alinwa said. You may never get the action out of the stock.

I use a similar approach but with a different purpose in mind. When I bed the action I have a screw in the front hole but only sticking out an 1/8" or so. Then when I glue the action in, this screw helps to get everything back in line the same as it was when bedding (Al's indexing system). This is especially helpful when working with a round action. I put a little of Brownell's release agent on the screw which keeps it from being glued into the stock, although sticking out only 1/8" it would probably pop out with the action when it's heated.

thanks again

I ment to put 1/8, don't know why i put 3/8.. He did say the screw was for helping to index a round action..but could also act as a lug.

Hope it turns out. Being able to do this will save me tons of $$$$ down the road.

Thanks again..

Thanks Speedy

How's the school going. Kids should be teenagers by now. I felt lucky to be at the Nats in St Louis when you made the HoF.

The best stuff around is:

HUNTSMAN Araldite 2014

Araldite® 2014 is a grey epoxy paste offering high chemical and temperature resistance. It has excellent adhesion to ferrous metals, composites and copper.

Speedy, with this product having a high temp resistance can the action still be removed with a hot clothes iron like I now do on JB Industroweld and Devcon?

BR LV Rifle, McMillan Bruno FG stock. Currently Bat SS action pillar bedded in Marine tex. I would like to glue it in to eliminate thinking about action screws and bedding, but I want to be able to get it out with reasonable heat/force maybe someday??? The current bedding is tight, so all I think I need is a thin film epoxy, since there are no voids that need filling, just a good adhesive. Am I right, and if so, which is the best adhesive and what special prep might be recommended to existing marine tex bed and action.
