For a beginning benchrest shooter wanting to shoot 100/200yd matches would he be better off with a 6BR or a 6PPC?

Also what is a barrel "tuner" and what does it accomplish?

For 100/200 Benchrest the 6PPC,
for casual 100/200 shooting a 6BR is good the PPC's edge is small but it definitely has an edge.

Benchrest with a Capital B as Jackie S. would say, is all about little edges. You give up a small edge to the other guy next thing you know you are not even in the hunt.

Group or Score?

6PPC for group shooting but 30BR if you are going to shoot score. Randy J.

As you will soon learn, there is an entire industry built around the 6PPC. With it, you have available the best in all components. You also have a proven winner.

The vast majority of the leg work has already been done. Shooters spend countless hours at the range, figuring out every concievable combination to make it just a little better.

I am going to give you some advice that we hand out quite often. Go to a Match. You can spend hours reading every post we have ever made, and still not have a grasp of what is really going on when it comes to Benchrest, (yes, with a Capitol "B"). Just one day at a real Benchrest Match will do more to open your eyes than ours of reading this Forum, or any other.

I use a tuner, but do as Charles said. Do a search. There is very little that has not already been said. If you are still confused, then come back and ask away.........jackie

Please do!

Bring a spotting scope on a tripod and ask to be able to stand behind the line and watch targets...... fascinating!

Excellent.... I'm sure you'll make friends. Try to get there early and stay late, you'll want to see the "whole thing".... By this I mean early so that the competitors and yourself can talk before the match begins.... While the match is going, these guys are gonna REALLY be concentrating and tough to carry on lengthy conversation... After the match.... Some guys travel far and are loading up ASAP... It's the "locals" that will most likely have time to really assist you in solid information (The no B.S. Benchrest Truth)...

I believe you'll find a solid contact whom may very likely will be a much needed mentor to assist you in a fruitfull Benchrest career.

Have fun and absorb the info like a sponge,

Tell us where you're located, someone on the list might know of a match close to you.

ASK to stand behind the line as an observer? Why?

It depends on the firing area, some clubs are set up so that only shooters, members or folks registered to be there for other reasons may be near the firing line. It's a safety rule so the RO knows where everybody is. Basically it just keeps guys off the street from wandering into harms way out of ignorance. Sometimes the shooters have been members for so long that they don't even realize that there's a block of rules concerning visitors or outsiders not signed into the club.

Just make your way around and make yourself known.

First Bench Rest Match that I went to as an observer I asked the RO whether or not I could stand behind the line with a spotting scope and he had to confer with someone....... they both agreed that "it shouldn't be a problem as long as I had hearing protection". Safety glasses aren't a requirement out here.

Stephen, if you allow casual observers to walk around your firing line without asking I'm a little surprised.

canis lupus,
As Randy J said above......if you are going to shoot score you want a 30BR.

Being that the 6 ppc has performed so well, why a 30 BR and not a 30 ppc.

Firing lines and the pad area behind are reserved for shooters and the people running the Shoot. Nobody wanders around unless are they one of these people.
Spotting scopes are set behind the pad. Most are set around the loading area. Never been to a BR shoot that anybody had to ask permission to set up a spotting scope.

Steve, three of the BR ranges out here have walls behind the firing line. 2 have a separated reloading area. None I've been to are set up like Visalia or Kelbly's or Canastota with an open lane behind the pad.

I still suggest that any newcomer ask around for information. Assuming that the range you're going to is "like your own" is a mistake. I've shot 7 ranges which accommodate competitive shoots......ALL set up differently. The 600yds matches here locally not only don't allow reloading, they don't even allow you to carry your gun to the line! You must uncase and set up on the floor at the bench. GOOFY! Hard on the ol' L-5 disc, but that's the rules. Regarding the setup of a spotting scope inside the wall.....without a free bench it's a wee bit problematic at 5 of the ranges here locally, someone could easily walk by and tip your scope. Two people could not pass in the lane without hitting the scope. If I was RO I'd ask the person to stay at his scope and take it with him when he goes to pee.....

I have both and IMHO, the 30PPC wont agg with the 30BR.

Reason being ?, even with the same action and barrel and good PPC brass ?, or is it because that's just the way it is.

Different Opinion

We shoot both down here in Houston, I have assembled both for friends.

I think it's a toss up. That being said, the 30BR does have more capacity with no loss in agging capability, so in the end, it might be the best choice........jackie

So it looks like if I get serious about this Benchrest shooting I should go with a 6PPC if I shoot 100/200 for Group score and 30BR if I want to shoot for SCORE only?

Something else to consider, many shooters have actions that do not have ejectors, and with these (check first for a particular action) a BR bolt face will work with both case head sizes. My Viper action is that way. I could, if there were score matches that I wanted to shoot, have a .30 BR barrel chambered for my rifle. It is currently a 6PPC. On the other hand, I believe that for an ejector to work properly, the bolt face must match the case.
