600 yrd Bench Portland, OR

600 Yarder Info

Cody.....Ive shot one 600 yarder up there and would like to shoot many more....Must we be members of NBRSA in order to shoot? Also do you have a phone # so one could get some quick info like how the matches are set up as far as number of shots, sighters, etc....As a former IHMSA long range handgunner one has to go slow with me......Thanks, Steve Roemer

hello All

sroemer,
For our regular 600 yard shoots we do not require a membership to NBRSA. This is the first time we are putting on a registered match. IF you want your scores to count then you would need to be a member of NBRSA. Like someone said, if you shot a record target you would be SOL. That said: If you want to show up and shoot, you will not be turned away. You can pay the entry fee and shoot and get your targets scored but any records will not be allowed. Only NBRSA members will be shooting for fake wood (trophies) as well.

lngrng,
I will check on the registration at the sign in. If someone knows more about this please chime in.

Alinwa,
You are welcome to come shoot the Tuesday night. One thing I would ask is that you have a SOLID 300 yrd zero before you come. It is hard to get someone on paper at 600 yrds at night because we cannot see bullet impacts. IF your on a 300 yrd you can figure about 10 MOA up to hit paper at 600.

To all others--
I would ask that you guys be patient with us on this first go at it. Peter and I, the guys running this have never shot a benchrest match before. We were approached about holding a match and thought that we could help out all the long range benchrest guys by holding a match before the nationals. We have spent the last couple weekends at the range getting the Pits and benches ready.

If you are planning on coming could i do a little role call. This way I know how many benches and target frames we will be using.

And if you have any questions or helpful advice please give me a call. We look forward to meeting all of you and hope for a great match.

Thanks Cody and Gary,

I can have a solid zero.

Gary thanx for the tip on swabbing out ;) I'll be sure and bring a rod and a pocket full of Butch's to the line.

Alinwa And Mark Van Beek And Cody

Al and Mark I would call Mrs Pat Ferrell at 405-842-9585 and give her a credit card and get your memberships done and over with before the match. She will send you a card the rule book and a sticker plus you get the NBRSA News letter.

Cody if you've got Gary Noble helping you out the match will go smoothly,he's got lots of matches under his belt.
Lynn

I think I might have lined up another shooter..........he wants to know how much are match fees for both the Tuesday nite shoot and for Saturday.

al

Fees

Match fees will be $15.00 enless we do a a state championship we might charge a little more.

First off--we shoot 600 yrd practice matches every month on the 3rd sat. During the winter months we shoot on the 3rd tuesday night aswell. When it stays light longer...i think next month (April) we will start shooting every Tuesday night. We charge $10.00 if you just want to pay per time or $30.00 for the year.
The resaon for the great deal on the $30.00 upfront was for us to raise some cash to purchase lights and extension cords for the night shoots. Most people pay the $30.00 for the year so you do not have to worry about it tell next Jan.

Thanx Cody,

So, on regards to your request for a roll call, I see ingrng (Mark Van Beek) myself and my brother-in-law coming as far as the locals mentioned in this thread .

Questions on the range,

Is the range open on Friday for a look around, get familiar with layout, etc/

Can one shoot 100 at the range on Friday, to establish a zero?

How far do shooters have to carry Heavy guns from parking to the benches?

Thanks,

Jay

Jay,

I don't know whether the range would be open to "non-members" or not. That said, I can take you in as my guest for a look around, and to get a zero. I need to zero my rifle as well. How many fellows are we talking about?

I get off work at 2:30 on Fridays, so I could meet you in Tualatin at the exit from I-5, and then we could make our way to the range.

Let me know,

Mark Van Beek

Jay,

As for the distance from parking to the benches, it's all level ground with concrete walkways, so carts work well. One can also park (for unloading and loading) next to the door to the range house. The benches are within spitting distance. Makes it easy for us old "stove-up codgers" to get set-up.
No question about it, this is a first class facility.

Mark

Friday

I will also be avaliavable friday to help get people in to get zero's and look around. So If you would like to come to the range just PM me and we can get a time a meeting place. Or just give me a call.

Cody

Thanks for the heads-up, Cody...........I'm sure some of the out of town folks will be happy to hear this.
Since I am a member, I took the liberty of inviting the three Idaho fellows (all known to me) to meet me in Tualatin and follow me to the range on Friday afternoon. I shot with JayIdaho for four years at the Montana club, and we have become chat buddies via this forum as well as E-Mails. He and his friends are good folks, and I'm glad that they're coming to the shoot. Here's hoping for this to become a regular event.

I don't know if you've heard from any of the fellows from Kalifornia, but I believe that there are a number of them plannng to be here as well. Don't forget the boys from Northern Washington, I'm sure there will be a few of them showing up too.

Again, I'm pleased to see this event finally happen!

Mark Van Beek

Thank You

I wanted to put a big thank you out to all that showed up and shot with us today. For the first time running a match I feel we did a pretty good job, but have some things to work on.

We at Tri County Gun Club will look forward to making a 600 yard bench program part of what we have to offer.

If any attendees have some helpfull critizism, please feel free to PM or call. All opinions are welcome.

We are finilizing a schedule for upcomming events and will post it here.

Thanks again,

Cody Howell

I wish I could have made it, it sounds as if the turnout was good, congrads to all, and good luck with future matches, maybe I will be able to make it next time. Ron Tilley

Nice Shooting Guys!!!!!

It looks like lots of familiar names on that list and Jim Galant is still shooting very well.Congratulations to all that attended and the winners.

Gary Noble what happened to Billy? Did his barrel unscrew? Tell him he better shoot better than that in April or even I can beat him.
How was the weather?
Jay,Idaho looks like he had a good time as well.
Alinwa were you using a tuner?
Lynn

Lynn,

Nope, not even a tuner would have helped me :D

I actually did ok considering, my groups were decent but with too many dropped shots. I shot different lots of brass for all but two relays which changed my poi. I also used different loads for doping than for record on two relays which resulted in my groups missing blue......I learned that there are guys that take this 600yd thang seriously and that a 6.5-20 power scope doesn't cut it. I shot a thrown-together 700 in a no-turn 6BR that I'd re-weighted to make 15.5 with decent balance.

I got my feet wet, I met some awesome guys and I'll be ready next time. I should have a 6X47 running for the next match and I'm fired up to finish my Heavy project now....

And I confirmed Henry's BC figures for the 108 Eubers......I was putting on 15moa from 100 to reach 600. This is spot on the charts because I'd dropped to 2800fps and HBC lists the BC @ .460 instead of the .540 quoted. This was my first time shooting the bullets over 350yds.

I worked it hard, sweated to get what I got, my shoulders and eyes hurt on the drive home........ and I WILL BE BACK :)

WithOUT "Big Red" ...... .....(the test-mule rifle which I used)

Thanx to Mark Van Beek for helping me out. Gary, Cody and Peter for running a tidy match. It went well enough that Gary was able to shoot both relays.

BTW Cody, sorry to post this here but I've mispalced your email and forgot to give you this, my NBRSA number is

N 85553 NW

thanx

A couple of other items.......

I'm not the one to be telling anyone anything about this sport  but to all of you who want to try it, GET A BIGGER SCOPE!!

I can't tell you how frustrating it is to shoot blind! I've never shot this way except for at 1000 and this 600yd game is close enough that you CAN see bullet holes. I could see them part of the time with my 6.5X20, only in the white. My kids just told me that my eyes are all red.

And just to tell on Jayidaho, (since he's still driving home) I pulled his targets for him............He shot an X on his sighter, I plugged it and he radio'd down for the small spot because it obscured the bull. And he BLEW the pin apart and ripped a three inch hole in he bull! So I patched up the hole and put in another little plug and he blew IT apart!!! He blew it up so bad that the paper disc rained down......... He got half of both pegs for a memento.....

scared me :D

fun time
