308x1.5

Has anyone successfully made brass by running 6br through the correct sizing die? Or is this only accomplished by cutting down a 308 and running through 3 different obsolete dies?

On a side note, if anyone sees any forming dies let me know.

Current 6BR brass is bigger at the back end than the 308 brass of that era was. But the reamer that was used originally will be the wild card. One possibility is the Peterson 7BR brass. Plus the front end differences, as well. You could measure the chamber cast and see..but remember that Cerrosafe expands by around .002-ish after a time. I'd try a 6BR case just to see and go from there. -Al

Measuring a 6br and the chamber cast, it definitely wont work. I really dont want to rechamber this rifle but I fear ill never find the dies

I know RCBS made these dies back in the day....Call em' about doing a set for you.

Do you have any capability to modify dies, or just use what you can find on a dealer's
shelf ?? As Al mentioned, cutting back a .308 die would work in some cases. Dig up a
SAMMI reamer print for the .308 then use it to check numbers against your casting.

The best I have is a grinder. Im looking high and low for the correct forming dies. I think if I had brass I could make it work but that also seems unlikely

Precision reloading has sizing die. I’d call CH4D, they have stuff on shelves they don’t list, same for Shooters Corner in NJ.

I called ch4d he basically laughed at me and told me to rechamber to 308. Said they could custom make days in 14 mo ths for tons of money

That’s too bad, ya going to need thick skin looking for this stuff. I’ve had good luck with eBay for obsolete forming dies and such.

Looking at numbers here, and all the prints. I do a lot of this work as a wild catter.
Let me do some digging and make a few calls......I may need your casting to have a real
good look......

There was a set of RCBS 308X1.5" Barnes dies that recently sold online. This was a pretty popular chambering for cast bullet competition. I'd check in on some of the case bullet forums and see what's out there. -Al

Al.....A couple of problems so far I check over is Franks original die. Looks like all
he did was shorten the die which leaves a much smaller base. I found a note on a
reamer print that does not match up being that there may have been a modified
reamer after the fact. Either way their showing a 20 degree shoulder and quite a
bit narrower at the shoulder than a standard 6 BR.

Logangrimnar......What is the base diameter on your casting ??

Yeah....the 308x 1.5" Barnes prints show about .010 variation on both base and shoulder. That's why sometimes a shortened seater die can work. But a correct form die is the best way.

The die sets I've looked at included a form die. -Al

The base measures .465 and just under the shoulder .460. My casting didn't fill in completely at the very base so Im guessing its .470 or very close.
Thank you for your help gentleman

I may have a die at home I will give you. I won't be back for about a month if you want to wait. It wouldn't be a big job to cut a FL 308 die off to fit what you have. Again, I have a standard body die at home I won't be using. ( In Florida for the winter)
