i am a fan of the 22 calibre centrefire or rimfire. i was wondering if this cartridge is still popular for benchrest 100 and 200 lv/hv? is it competetive or would i be wasting my time and just use it for varminting. thinking of having a benchrest rifle built. thanks for your input.

I think there aren't more for a couple of reasons: 1. The .22 isn't legal as a Sporter and I am told many folks use their Sporter for everything. 2. Making cases requires an aditional step or two. Benchrest folks seem to pride themselves in whining about making cases for some reason.

Something to consider is the .22 Beggs. He uses the 22 Russian case with one or two minor changes in the reamer and I think they are even no turn. Easy way to have adn shoot a .22.( talk about being lazy about making cases, eh? ) He also has gotten away from that evil 133 with his chamberings :D ;)

20 caliber on .220 Russian

Maybe even better yet is the 20 - 220 Russian that Stu Harvey has a reamer for. No turn. Funny we were just talking about this. I believe he said one could use the Beggs Die with the correct size bushing! Talk about easy (and yes I am lazy too!) What a great switch barrel > 6 ppc, 22 ppc, 20 ppc!!!!

Pete,

Making 22ppc brass is no harder than 6ppc. The forming you are talking about are for the varients (22ppc shorts). I make several hundred 22ppc -.100 shorts a year and it is a minor discomfort in the butt. But I do believe that with the new 8208 or a really slow lot of old 8208, a full size 22ppc may be viable.

The 220 Beggs or Hoehn's 220 varient is a option also.

22ppc

Since you did ask about 100-200 yard Benchrest, I will give you an answer with that in mind.

The fullsize 22PPC is not that competitive, mainly because it (probably) passes that magic powder volume to bullet diameter that seems tomake chamberings such as the 6PPC, 30BR and a few others so inherantly accurate.

Many have tried the full size 22PPC. It simply leaves too much on the table, agg wise.

Of course, when you shorten the case .100, all sorts of magic occurs. It becomes one of the most accurate chamberings ever conseived. As was said, the 220 Russian does about the same thing.

In my opinion, the three most inherantly accurate chamberings at this time are the 22PPC .100 short, the 6PPC, and the 30BR........jackie

First let me say most negative of what you hear about the 22 PPC is baseless and without merit.

The 22 PPC is as good today as when it first won in 1974. Palmaisano, Pindell, and Pawlak spent good time and money developing the PPC. It first came out as a 22 later the 6. There are several reasons the 22 PPC and all other short range BR cartridges don't show up regularly at BR shoots. One reason is the 6 PPC is so dominant. Second the 6 can be shot in all classes. The 22 PPC, the original, is as good as any PPC variation that includes the Waldog and the Beggs.

My comments are partial because I actually have several barrels for the 22 PPC. Shooters that shoot a 22 PPC are just as competitve as the rest. I have many .1 aggs at 100 with my 22 PPC's . I shot two .18xx aggs with my Rail 2 different barrels two different bullets at 2 different Ranges Visalia and Phoenix 2 months apart.

I have 4 barrels for 22 PPC 2 for my Hall LV and 1 each for my Rail barrels. I have one barrel to be be chambered HV for my Wichita HV.

Bullzeye you would not be wasting your time with a 22 PPC in BR. You know you could chamber any PPC barrel on the same action. A combo gun 22 and 6 PPC would be a good way to go.

Here is something i often wonder about. Why do most all the 22cal shooters shoot 52gr bullets? Wouldnt a 63gr cheek or whatever be a bit better at 200 yards? I have a 12 twist 22 br that shoots these 63gr bullets very very well at 100 and 200 yards. So i guess i am wondering why everyone use the little 52ish grain bullets in the 22 ppc? lee

PS I really want a 22 ppc, and i will probably buy a barrel from a friend that is a 22 ppc short .100 I just am really excitted about the 22cal ppc for some reason!! I am really finding that i enjoy the ppc benchrest shooting the most out of all the benchrest discipline, and the 22cal stuff just makes since to me. But thats just my opinion, and believe me it isnt worth much!!! Fellas have a great weekend!! Lee
