    New Brass

Today I started using some new .308 brass with all the specifications I have been using with the old brass. Same load, same bullet and powder, etc. My question: Does new brass need to be "broken in" i.e. shot a few times to gain the maximum accuracy from it?

    Need Your Opinion

The rifle has a Borden action, Jewell trigger, muzzle brake and a 29" barrel. The scope is a Nightforce 12X42. I do not use wind flags but do use front and rear rests. The ammo is mine. Lapua brass, 105 Berger hybrid over 39.7 of H4350.

    Need Your Opinion

Shoot alone most of the time and don't really have anyone to compare with. This afternoon, got out my 6X47 for the 500 meter range. Conditions were almost ideal with no mirage and light to no wind at all (for once). Five targets averaged .660 MOA. I'm kind of pleased with that given the fact...

    Latest Savage Bolt Mystery

Glad you responded. That pretty well solves my mystery. Thank you.

    Latest Savage Bolt Mystery

Thank you for your reply. I did buy the rifle new. Could very well be the 'smith who changed out the barrel for me did it. Not a big deal-just more a point of curiosity for me. At least now I know what it is. I'm not up for pushing the velocity up to the point it is with the 29.5 of Varget...

    Latest Savage Bolt Mystery

Thanks for your reply. I take back my saying that no one has disassembled the bolt. The man that installed an aftermarket barrel for me, I suppose, could have done it but doing anything to the bolt was not part of our deal. I also think it looks rather suspicious in that I can't imagine Savage...

    Latest Savage Bolt Mystery

I'm handing off this question to those of you who are more learned than I and may have a rational answer to something that showed-up as I disassembled my Savage rifle bolt to investigate the need to have the firing pin bushed. (There seems to be a lot of slop where the pin protrudes from the...

    Hard Bolt Lift

Thanks for the reply. The bolt is coming apart right now.

    Hard Bolt Lift

I set my sizer based on how the shell feels as I chamber it. This has pretty faithfully resulted in .001"-.002" pushback on the shoulder and a very slight drag when chambering. In shooting 28.5 grains of Varget instead of the 29.5 I was firing today, I have very slight cratering and no bolt...

    Hard Bolt Lift

Mr. Schmidt: Here's a picture of two shells fired today. Nothing fancy about this gun-strictly a benchrest wannabee for me to shoot as small as groups as possible despite the Kansas wind and mirage. The rifle is a Savage I rebarreled with a Pac-Nor barrel and installed an aftermarket trigger...

    Hard Bolt Lift

I've got good accuracy at 300 meters with my 6BR using Berger 105 BTs and 29.5 of Varget. However, I am also getting hard bolt lift and cratered primers. Would dropping .5 grains to 29 be enough to remedy this situation? I used to shoot 28.5 of Varget with the 105 BT with no similar problems...

    Ladder Test

And Then The Seating Test Attached is another picture, this time of a seating depth test I did. I had planned on following through with some of the suggestions I'd read but grandfather duties are calling and I'll be traveling soon. As you can see, I selected 43.7 Varget and seating depths of...

    Ladder Test

I'll look into this. I am not shooting a bench rifle but just want to get the best from what I've got. Shooting in damp, cool weather with no mirage and dead calm conditions. (6 AM) Always use fouling shots. What is the significance of using a 175 grain bullet and 10 shots? If not going up by...

    Ladder Test

    Thanks. I'll do that.

    Ladder Test

I did a ladder test this AM at 300 meters using .308 Sierra 175s and Varget. Savage model 12 with Criterion barrel. No wind. After looking at it, I realized that I don't have a clue as to how to interpret it and was hoping that someone could give me some help on this so I can go ahead with the...

    New Scope

"Shooting for groups" rang my bell. I'm no competitor but that's what I like doing the most so that sure leans things in the direction of a 1/8 MOA scope.

    New Scope

Thanks for your reply. What I'm after is others' experience shifting from 1/8 to 1/4 and whether it was a problem for them.

    New Scope

I'm shopping around for a new scope-a more powerful one. The one I have an eye on has 1/4 minute MOA adjustment. I've always had 1/8" MOA adjustment and never have even tried a 1/4". The question is, based on your experience, am I going to miss the 1/8" with the finer adjustment? This is on...

    Basic Benchrest Technique

In an effort to improve my shooting from the bench with my 6mmBR, I have some questions: How do you hold your rifle? A tight hold on the stock or just enough to squeeze the trigger? Hard against your shoulder or do you let it travel on the bags a bit before it impacts your shoulder? Is making...
